Two things both true:

The loved ones of Venezuelans are celebrating that they are no longer in CECOT; some are celebrating their return home.

And.

It is a violation of international law to cause someone to be returned where they’ll be persecuted. Most of them never got a chance to make that case.

Writing about cricket and identity next week. England and India go to Old Trafford for the fourth test. That was where Ranji made his England debut on this day in 1896. He scored 154 not out in the Ashes, after the popular + press outcry against the MCC leaving him out at Lords on racial grounds

One of the great things about political strategists is that they are all, in fact, eminently replaceable. Indeed, it's usually best to replace them before they get to the 'you can't replace me, only I have the magic' stage.
When you definitely have a sense of perspective.

Far from the biggest news today, but I am shocked by how far down the authoritarian path the US already is, in just a few months. Orban, Erdogan, Putin: these guys must be watching in awe, with their jaws on the floor.

🧵 I argue that we can understand the functioning of democracy through 3 core ideals, verification, deliberation and accountability. While no democracy fully achieves those ideals, this thread explains how MAGA destroys all three and inevitably results in democratic regression into authoritarianism.
The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world.
They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

The campaign itself seems quite disorientating in retrospect.

The most pro-European party was the Conservative Party, led by Margaret Thatcher.

Papers like The Sun, The Daily Mail & the Telegraph all backed staying in.

The young were more Eurosceptic than the old, and women more hostile than men.
