An absolutely wild thread – well worth a read

An underreported part of US campus repression post-2023 was the pivot to making “[IDF] military veteran” a protected class coterminous with “[pro-occupation Israeli/Jew]”. Students protesting the Gaza war were charged with *discrimination based on veteran status*. migrantinsider.com/p/scoop-appl...

Anyone who questions your prerogative to tell your little stories is participating in a betrayal on levels that no one’s ever seen

I am really struck by this idea that criticizing someone’s scholarship amounts to suppressing their voice/preventing them from creating a name for themselves. I shouldn’t be surprised that that is what people think is the main purpose of historical scholarship, and yet

I am at my wit's end for how to react to AI evangelism from people I truly admire in contexts where a mocking response would be inappropriate, but it's also clear that a conversation is not being invited because we each made up our minds ages ago and no longer inhabit the same information ecosystem

I enjoy reading about other people's work and writing, but I cannot relate to the people who say social media has made them better writers and thinkers, or helped them meet people. Wish I could say that! I can only do all those things (writing, thinking, meeting people) when I am not on here.

She’s left us no choice. It’s time for Isaac Chotiner to interview Bari Weiss.

I kind of can’t believe this Bari Weiss quote is even real, and yet www.nytimes.com/2025/10/06/b...
“I know that there are some people in this room who don’t believe that my marriage should have been legal … and that’s ok. Because we’re all Americans who want lower taxes.”

I am certain that if Zohran Mamdani had been accused of saying “these people and their fucking tree houses” about Jews and Sukkot Tablet’s response would decidedly not be, “Whether he said it or not, it’s an iconic addition to our Sukkot meme repertoire.”

Thanks to a @uvalibrary.bsky.social's Culture, Engagement, & Community grant, I'm able to expand the "Zine Bakery @ Scholars' Lab" public zine distro's capacity (aka my tired zine-assembling hands), so our public racks of free zines should stay fuller + w/a wider rotation of zines 📚✨
Graphic showing a tall wire grid rack full of colorful zines attached with clothespins, then the same rack again with different zines and sometimes depleted as folks take zines before the rack is refilled. A wire bookshelf holding more zines is also pictured, next to the caption "(Added a second zine rack Spring 2025 to help keep them from emptying as fast)"

Fun word fact is that φοῖνιξ (phoinix)—meaning reddish-purple in Greek—is the basis for Phoenix 🐦‍🔥 and the word Phoenicians (the city of Tyre made some gorgeous purple, y’all). I’m fun at cocktail parties!

Getting old is basically repeatedly asking “wait, HOW old was [x] fictional character that we were supposed to interpret as decrepit and basically on the threshold of death,” and the answer is usually, like, 45

Reading book acknowledgments for books published since 2020 always hit different because of the baseline of horror and depression that authors report having to fight to claw their book into existence.

i didn't get to include the epigraph i wanted but i really wanted y'all to know that i'd picked the following from terry pratchett's _the wee free men_: "it didn't stop being magic just because you found out how it was done." (a good choice, right? but alas, permissions.)
