Based on his training as an illustrator, he had first applied for a position as a graphic designer at Konami but was rejected. He then made the surprising decision to re-apply, this time for a position as a programmer. The catch was that he had no experience in—or knowledge of—programming. As Masato Maegawa described it, the hiring manager at Konami was impressed by Suganami’s persistence and decided to give him a chance, and so he was hired on as a programmer in 1990."
