I think a lot of democrat supporters would rather lose than cede ground to leftists they see as disloyal, which is actually, if you think about it, just another "refusing to vote for the less bad option."

It's true-ish for sure, but that shouldn't offer any sort of protection here. If someone made a device that explodes they couldn't respond with "Iunno, shrapnel goes where it goes, too complicated to track perfectly" we wouldn't let them get away with it.
