Support your local bookstore, friends.
There was an article in The Guardian a few weeks back about how Gen Z find bookshops preferable to online shopping, and a key factor was that an algorithm will offer you 6000 books identical to the one you just finished whereas a bookseller will offer you three that are different but meet the vibe.

Every word of this thread rings so true and is my experience too. It's also part of the reason I do some of my own publishing, because why not? Hybrid is becoming ever more common, and mostly for the reasons in this thread.
I think one of the hardest things about being a career writer in traditional publishing is that writing attracts the neurodivergent brain while the variable reinforcement schedule punishes it. We are all the rat at the water bottle, waiting for the hit of cocaine. You get one win, and you need MORE.

Art is an act of hope. Writing is an act of rebellion. The world will always need more stories--from real human beings, not bullshit plagiarism machines. Every book is a love story from the author, and every reader is fighting the war against cruelty, ignorance, and hopelessness. We are fighting.

This is the thread I needed to hear today. Publishing is in the darkest moment I've seen in 14 years. I'm struggling, my friends are struggling, the industry is struggling. When writers gather together, we whisper our fears. All we want is to keep publishing, but there are no guarantees, these days.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Here's another piece of writing advice, that's particularly apposite on this website: Be bored.

Ignore your phone, step away from the computer, go for a walk, do some gardening, just stare out the fucking window. Quiet your brain and let your imagination free.

✨Augustus in colour✨

The Prima Porta Augustus is one of the most famous sculptures of ancient Rome. Earlier depictions of the sculpture noted the remnants of colour but the craze for cleaned statuary meant much detail was lost to the casual gaze.

The thing about being a secondhand bookseller is you get tiny snippets of people's lives from the birthday cards or photos used as bookmarks, the selection they had and the inscriptions from others in the front cover.

I don't know who you were Woj, but I hope you beat it in the end. 💜

AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

If you're in this business long enough you'll see:

- People you don't like seeing success
- People who annoy the shit out of you seeing success
- People who are successful despite incredible mediocrity (in your opinion)

You know what? Everyone deserves their success. Just keep working on your own.

While at FAN EXPO recently, horror legend, John Carpenter, confirmed that he is currently working on a sequel to his classic 1982 movie, The Thing.

"We're working on it now," he said.

What's it going to be called? I'm voting for:

So much this.
Reminder that not answering the phone is not rude, it's an entirely normal and healthy personal boundary. Just because someone can reach you 24/7 does not mean you're obligated to respond. Leave a message.

So far I have made my family watch Mars Attacks, Annihilation, and Plan 9 From Out of Space for movie night.

On the basis of sheer weird randomness, I'm pretty sure I'm either going to get banned from recommendations, or they are going to get weirder in their movie tastes... Possibly both.

The AI-response "Everything can be faked" discourse interests me partly by how much it leaves out of "everything."

AI might be able to fake a picture of a meal or video of a football match, but it can't fake the experience of eating or playing.

Being embodied seems like a kind of resistance.
