Writing for @scotnational.bsky.social, our Rewilding Relations Officer Hugh Webster explores what Slovenia can teach us about living with predators.

The article comes as communities in Highland and Moray are invited to share views on a potential lynx reintroduction in Scotland.

Here's what Scotland can learn from Slovenia on reintroducing major predators
As Scotland considers re-introducing lynx, it is worth looking at what has been happening in Slovenia

Slovenia is smaller and more densely populated than Scotland. But despite its small size and relatively populous countryside, it's home to nearly 1,000 brown bears, over 120 wolves and a growing population of around 50 reintroduced lynx.

Read that again: **116** times.

Why are we STILL having to argue the case for rewilding??

Relentless "improvement" of the countryside leaves no space for nature.

But ever more people are now helping the wild return, through *rewilding*.

No matter who you are or where you live, you too have a part to play in the fight.

There is no better New Year's resolution.

In 2025 we used your donations to plant 100s of trees with lots of kids. We also removed non-native trees, desilted a pond and did a detailed vegetation survey. Pls consider helping us to do more in 2026 to restore this ancient woodland www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding...

Deer numbers have been rocketing in the UK and Ireland, causing *massive* damage to nature and society.

The solutions?

Eat wild venison instead of farmed meat, and reintroduce missing native predators like lynx.

Rivers with beavers can have up to 6x more species of fish, amphibians, water insects, water plants, and dragonflies, and up to 60x more abundance, than those without.

What the beaver does for nature is absolutely mind-blowing.
