My cat Mo is on guard and ready to defend us from ghosts.
A black cat sitting on a red couch stares wide-eyed at apparently nothing.

Until a few years ago, it was a criminal offence in Canada to scare the Queen of England

The Carney government's new hate crime proposals have a similar aim—to protect the ruling classes from discomfort and political dissent

My latest for @breachmedia.ca

New hate crime law is a cover for suppressing Palestine protests ⋆ The Breach
The proposed 'Combatting Hate Act' is built on the idea that protests inspire hateful violence, and gives police the tools to crack down on expression

I hope people in NS fight back against this, and win. NS Health is marketing an AI chat bot as a RELIABLE source of info to PREVENT infection. This is straight from the marketing. But it was trained on droplet dogma and claims COVID spreads by droplets predominantly. This is unacceptable. /1

Holy F. NS health is using an AI chat bot called Nova and their recent Facebook post encourages people to ASK THE AI CHAT BOT about their SYMPTOMS. This is absolutely wild. www.yourhealthns.ca #nspoli

Trans people, I am once again asking you—nay, begging you—to share something good that is going on in your lives right now!

I’ll start: I’m working on a new graphic novel and having a blast with the creative team we’ve assembled!

At this point, I really want to ask, is there ANYTHING that AI does well? Because everything Ive encountered in academia is just enshittification like this thread, and profiting off struggling and vulnerable students at their lowest points

The new Wiley journal review system is an absolute nightmare. Editorial assistants have been replaced by a clunky, AI-enabled website that makes it harder to find and invite reviewers. Associate editor workloads have increased. I'm not convinced the invitations to reviewers are even going through.

What’s yours? I thought I was following you already over there from before I don’t see you.

I think a lot lately about how so many Black folks were hesitant to come to this site because many of us figured this is where it would go and I have never seen one person so utterly committed to single handedly burning any and all good will their site has accumulated like a five alarm gas fire.

That makes total sense to me. It's sort of like how in my area (Sackville, near tip of Bay of Fundy) we've had beautiful sunny days all through September -- which, yay; but accompanied by almost total lack of rain makes it eerie, unsettling, and worrisome.

In next door New Brunswick -- Monday is 29C with humidex 33C. Those are temperatures are barely supposed to get in July? I would like to register a complaint.

what's the stupidest/randomest Simpsons quote that lives in your head rent free? Mine is the urge to say "you said go to bread" every time I am about to head to bed.

It was very special to work with six brilliant, thoughtful Indigenous writers — Michelle Good, Julian Brave NoiseCat, Eva Jewell, Janelle Lapointe, Anna McKenzie and Riley Yesno — on this series about truth and reconciliation, in print & online for @thewalrus.ca. thewalrus.ca/truth-and-re...
The Truth of Reconciliation | The Walrus
The TRC report, released in 2015, laid out ninety-four clear Calls to Action. Ten years later, Indigenous writers reflect on what has and hasn’t been achieved

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

In 2020, Canada Post letter carriers literally carried the economy on their backs to deliver parcels and goods to Canadians who were staying home during the pandemic.

I do not believe this is appropriate Thanks for their service.

i have to say, as a trans journalist who has covered the "trans debate" for about a decade now, there is no daylight between how the trump administration and conservatives lie about tylenol and autism and how they've lied about youth trans care.

Someone told me they don’t bother masking their child at the grocery store because "they don’t wear one in school anyway"

Schools are incinerators that fuel infections out into the community. The elderly, the high-risk, they shop too. Masking in public spaces helps break that chain ⛓️‍💥

I rarely share organizations in Gaza because it’s too hard to verify that they are doing the work they say they are but I know multiple people who were able to evacuate through the people working on this fund who are funding trips out of Gaza City (it’s $2100 a trip for 16 people).

Peeling Back the Tech Broligarchy's Glass Onion
'Knives Out: Glass Onion’ skewered the tech industry. Three years later, the film remains an urgent call to reclaim entertainment and tech from the broligarchy.
