After the assassination of Melissa Hortman it’s not hard to understand why a woman in Minnesota would be afraid of a man in a mask who says he’s a cop.

NPR built a visual archive of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, showing exactly what happened through the lenses of the people who were there. In "Chapter 2: Stop the Steal," we look at how false claims of a stolen election mobilized Trump supporters.

A reminder - before Trump, MAGA, Musk and Fox rewrote history - that this is what the entire country agreed had happened five years ago today:

Missed this when it came out. Orgs that support elderly, low-income, disabled, rural - need to fight as public services become digitized.

I'm watching Season 2 of "High on the Hog" on Netflix, and it struck me how critical HBCUs in Atlanta were to the Civil Rights movement in the 20th. THAT is why Trump and MAGA are attacking higher education. We need to resist at every turn.

I don't know what's going on, but I heard the song "Big Country" (1983) twice this month after not hearing it in decades. What does it mean?

@alsobrooks.senate.gov As a Marylander and proud parent of a trans kid, I am appalled at your vote on S1071. I will remember this failure to protect trans folx.
Here are the 28 Dem Senators who voted to advance the first federal ban on trans athletes & a federal definition of sex that would make trans & intersex people non-existent: Angela Alsobrooks (MD), Tammy Baldwin (WI), Richard Blumenthal (CT), Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE), Chris Coons (DE), ->
By a vote of 76-23, S 1071 passes the motion to proceed to the motion to concur. Won't know who voted for this until the roll call is uploaded, but safe to say it passed with the support of at least 24 members of the Democratic caucus. (Rand Paul probably voted nay and Steve Daines has been absent).

This is appallingly callous and an affront to the promise made to all our troops. VA Healthcare isn't perfect, but it is damn good, essential, and morally right.
"The Trump Administration plans to abruptly eliminate as many as 35,000 health care positions at the Dept of Veterans Affairs this month...

"The cuts come after a reorganization effort already resulted in the loss of almost 30,000 V.A. employees this year..."

Strains on the Veterans Affairs system could grow with the elimination of as many as 35,000 mostly unfilled health care positions, including doctors and nurses.

Stay strong, New Orleans. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Federal agents have started dispersing across immigrant neighborhoods in New Orleans, marking the latest front in the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. DHS confirmed the operation in a statement, calling it “Swamp Sweep.”

Congresspeople should NEVER get pensions. Ever. 401k contribution plus a match, fine. But it should not be a lifetime job. FFS. Most of us don't get pensions.
I just realized that Majorie Taylor Greene likely picked January 5th because it would (barely) make her eligible for a congressional pension.

A House Member has to win three consecutive terms and serve at least five years. January 3rd marks her fifth year in Congress.

Don't forget that Zohran Mamdani spent his entire campaign standing proudly beside the trans community. He went to trans rights rallies just to show support. He proudly waved trans rights flags without hesitation. He refused to back down in support of trans rights. That makes me happy.
