New 🧪paper: We show the importance of selecting several indicators, both diversity and trait-based, to capture the broader signals of change in benthic communities due to bottom trawling activities.

Saving lives, saving you money, improving the flow of traffic, there’s no downside to switching to 20mph default limit.

It would be great if we could take a whole country and change the default speed limit to 20mph and then compare it to one left at 30mph. What if it reduced casualties by 25% and with lower risk reduced insurance premiums by £45 a year? Well it did! bit.ly/4gIBPlJ

Started my travels to teach an @icesmarine.bsky.social training course on the bottom trawling risk assessment method that we have been applying in WGFBIT. Currently cruising through Belgium on the Eurostar, continuing tomorrow to Copenhagen after a night at my parents.

The “E-Bike Effect:” Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%.

E-bikes support fewer car trips.

They are not 'cheating,' but are serious transportation.

In @projectfishistory.bsky.social we're after any historical records of herring fishing and spawning, so hearing about these kind of traps is very useful.

@icesmarine.bsky.social's journal, ICES Journal of Marine Science, is turning 100!

After an inspiring week at #ICESASC25, and to celebrate this milestone, submit your paper to an upcoming themed set highlighting the evolution and future of marine science.

Another critique showing that the Sala et al. 2021 estimate of carbon release by bottom trawling is ridiculous.

It estimates an increase in NW European shelf OC mineralization of 0.27 Mt C yr−1, which is an order of magnitude smaller the previous estimates.

Starting the last day of my travel back from the #ICESASC25 in Lithuania (train ferry combo). The travel was fairly cheap with interrail with the ferry was only £126 return. But it does take 3 days 🙂 @sosbangor.bsky.social @icesmarine.bsky.social

#ICESASC25 was a game-changer! Stepping outside of my usual research into the world of #fisheries has been valuable. Understanding where #GreatCormorants fish is a priority to manage interactions with human activities. New connections and prospectives!
