Thank you for really listening to caller @annemarie1.bsky.social & as you succinctly said: "The short termism of prioritising the economy has led to the economy suffering because there have been so many people infected (w Covid) & are now unable to work".

Frustratingly this data is a year old now & we don’t have more recent data for prevalence of Long Covid in kids because ONS has axed the Covid/Long Covid survey.

If prevalence has continued to rise at the same rate as before, there could be as many as 240K children in the UK with Long Covid by now.

Hi @mrjamesob.bsky.social,

Thanks for discussing Long Covid in children on your show today.

As of March 2024, ONS reported that over 111K kids had Long Covid.

And that’s just 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 & 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. If you extrapolate across the UK, it’s over 120K.

The number nearly DOUBLED in a year between Mar 2023 & Mar 2024.

2. After all, the ground has already been prepared on both sides of the Atlantic, as people with disabilities are accused of being workshy shirkers and subjected to brutal regimes of assessment and coercion. A target has already been put on their backs.

Health officials downplayed COVID risk by overemphasizing "underlying health conditions," leading many to drop their guard.

Most people have "underlying health conditions." Anyone can be vulnerable. Everyone should take precautions.

It's malpractice that they are minimizing bird flu the same way.

As someone who works in the NHS, I wasn’t offered a COVID booster through work. Flu - yes, had that early on.

These statistics do not surprise me in the least as the NHS seems to have gone backwards in infection prevention and control for airborne viruses. It’s really sad.

Long COVID can make you unable to do your job. 6% of people who are “inactive, not looking for work” have Long COVID (see purple bars in chart above). This *inability to work* represents a huge human & societal burden. We need to prevent it affecting more people and help those already suffering. 9/

99.8% survival rate would still mean 670,000 dead Americans if everyone were infected. In fact, the actual number is >1.2 million so far, more than all combat deaths in every American war since 1775 combined.
Why should we care about a virus with a "99.8% survival rate"?

This thread highlights the actual impact a virus with a high survival rate can have on the population and why it is all the people who survive that we should be most worried about. 🧪🧵1/

For anyone commenting with appreciation for our masks, of course we’re masked! We’ve all been through airports and aeroplanes, it’s winter and lots of viruses circulating. There are clinically vulnerable people here, and many with CV kids. It’s right thing to do.

1. Mass testing, including free LFDs.
2. Recent vax for many
3. Only the very beginning of omicron diversity
4. Multiple effective monoclonal antibodies
5. Boosters available
6. Recognition (grudgingly) of airborne transmission

Please don't let the growing potential of a bird flu pandemic distract you from the fact that we are still in the covid pandemic.

And repeat covid infections increase your risk of long term health problems. Serious ones.
