I am still upset about the panelist I heard at the Global Media Forum a couple months ago whose title was "Microsoft Director of Journalism". Microsoft does not do journalism.

"Why would OpenAI and Microsoft spend $23 million to give 'free training' on how to use AI to teachers? Because they love teachers? No. Because they want to get their products into public schools in an attempt to cultivate the education market."

3 MAGA extremists have re-intro'd a bill that allows South Carolina to execute women who receive an abortion. If you haven't heard about S 323, it's because corporate media has completely ignored it.

A WILD ONE: A man broke his leg during an arrest by ICE at a car wash south of L.A.

ICE has held him under 24/7 guard at a hospital, registering him under a pseudonym, for *37 days* without telling him why.

A judge has ordered his immediate release.

Here’s a thought for the press: if the only statement from ICE that you were able to fact check turned out to be a lie, maybe don’t lead with their version of a story requiring them to “defensively” fire bullets at someone.
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, said the shooting erupted after patrolling agents were
"rammed by 10 cars" and "boxed in." Agents then fired "defensive shots" when they discovered the woman "was armed with a semi-automatic weapon" while driving one of the cars.
The time and location of the shooting weren't immediately known. No law enforcement officials were hurt. McLaughlin said the woman who was shot
"drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds." But Larry Merritt, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman, said she was found near 39th Street and Pershing Road and taken in fair condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.
The Chicago Sun-Times and WBEZ have not independently verified ICE's account of the traffic stop.

Studying podcasts academically is usually already well covered in media, communications, and linguistics programs. Why isn't this just a path in one of those? Likely because it's yet another cash grab by a uni trying to rope in rich kids who think they can all be six-figure podcasters, not academics
jayembosch.bsky.social
The real criticisms aren't about WHAT's studied in higher ed but that this is being presented as a commercialized investment in industry training. It's absurd money for what's likely just gonna be podcasting trade school, already covered by many cheaper, broader programs

Here’s the things I believe to be true:

- we need intellectual centers to study phenomena shaping our world, so we can better understand how their origins & their impact, with the perspective of time.

- Creator/influencer studies is a growing field that does that work.

- that is not what this is.

They pulled the same shit with youth care. Made it seem like every kid who walked in was put on blockers and hormones. The reality was there was a 5 year wait list and most kids aged out. Instead of increasing access, they shut it down and now are implementing conversion therapy centers in the NHS.

And the gender criticals will still say that care is too easily accessed because they don't think trans people should exist at all.
awjt.bsky.social
In Glasgow, there is a 224-year waiting list for gender clinic appointments.

224 YEARS.

This is institutionalised discrimination. It's unacceptable, it's ruining people's lives and it needs to change.

We have the solution. Time for politicians to act.
Gender Clinic Files: Some people in Scotland will never get a gender clinic appointment on a 224-year waitlist. This system is failing to support people to transition not because it is broken, but by design. The frustrating thing is that this would not be a difficult problem to solve under a different political paradigm.

Trans+ people do not need to be assessed by gender clinics or diagnosed by psychiatrists to tell us what we already know: we are trans. The healthcare we need, especially when it comes to hormones, is already available to cis people through making an appointment with their GP.

Gender clinics are unnecessary and exist to segregate healthcare for Trans+ people. Abolishing this system and providing Trans+ healthcare in primary care, at the GP through an informed consent model, would solve many of the issues this data reveals. GPs already prescribe hormones to cis adults. Trans+ adults simply need the same access to this healthcare.

News coverage of the Trump administration's proposed "compact" with universities has been, so far, shockingly bad.

I hate to pick on NPR reporter Elissa Nadworny, who's usually a solid reporter, but almost every important thing I heard her say this morning about the proposed "compact" was false.

fishkin.bsky.social
The central mistake is her swallowing the administration's false characterization. Nadworny said: "[T]he biggest difference is instead of threats, if you agree to these demands, it would provide a reward."

This is like when a mob boss says it might be very rewarding for you to purchase "protection"
fishkin.bsky.social
The "compact" is a threat, with the administration explicitly stating that it plans to disfavor universities that don't sign in areas from foreign student visas, student loans, federal contracts as well as grants, and even tax [501(c)(3)] status.

It's a maximalist plan of 1st Amendment violation.

The compact is *very explicit* about the point that if you don't join it, you "elect[] to forego federal benefits"—not NEW benefits, but the "benefits" to which you are entitled now under federal law, from foreign students getting visas to all students getting loans to the school's 501(c)(3) status.

Any reporter can be excused for only mentioning a couple of things in a quick summary. But to summarize these demands as "mainstream ideas" plus "some" that are "more partisan"... that is game, set, and match to the government's spin team.

There are mainstream parts of the document, some of which just restate federal law, and/or urge things colleges are already doing.

These are a ruse, explicitly trying to lure Elissa Nadworny and other journalists to incorrectly characterize the compact as "mainstream."

bsky.app/profile/fish...
fishkin.bsky.social
Large swaths of the 'compact restate federal law. Eg. Student discipline can't be biased race, sex or gender identity (not sure what the last thing means since universities have to adopt the government's definition of sex).

All that is already required by Title VI, Title IX, and other federal laws.
