Studying podcasts academically is usually already well covered in media, communications, and linguistics programs. Why isn't this just a path in one of those? Likely because it's yet another cash grab by a uni trying to rope in rich kids who think they can all be six-figure podcasters, not academics

Instead of increasing access, they shut it down and now are implementing conversion therapy centers in the NHS.

News coverage of the Trump administration's proposed "compact" with universities has been, so far, shockingly bad.

I hate to pick on NPR reporter Elissa Nadworny, who's usually a solid reporter, but almost every important thing I heard her say this morning about the proposed "compact" was false.

The central mistake is her swallowing the administration's false characterization. Nadworny said: "[T]he biggest difference is instead of threats, if you agree to these demands, it would provide a reward."

This is like when a mob boss says it might be very rewarding for you to purchase "protection"

The compact is *very explicit* about the point that if you don't join it, you "elect[] to forego federal benefits"—not NEW benefits, but the "benefits" to which you are entitled now under federal law, from foreign students getting visas to all students getting loans to the school's 501(c)(3) status.

Any reporter can be excused for only mentioning a couple of things in a quick summary. But to summarize these demands as "mainstream ideas" plus "some" that are "more partisan"... that is game, set, and match to the government's spin team.

There are mainstream parts of the document, some of which just restate federal law, and/or urge things colleges are already doing.

These are a ruse, explicitly trying to lure Elissa Nadworny and other journalists to incorrectly characterize the compact as "mainstream."
