Editing. Not “editing” in and of itself, but that I’m a bit of a perfectionist. Even when working with editors, it’s hard for me to say “enough” and leave my work alone. This has always been a challenge for me, & part of what delayed my doctoral dissertation defense years ago. #writinglifemonthly

Drafting / research for sure. I love seeing my story come alive & my characters developing. Also, while I tend to write what I know, I also like to stretch myself, therefore research — either on subjects I know little about, or more depth into ones I do. It grounds my stories in a bit of reality.

My MC was well on her way to a career she loved, w/an SO who supported that. But she was pressured by church & family to fit into a certain (gendered) mold to conform to her religious faith, so she let it all go.

But even then, she was a ⬛️ peg in a ⚪️ hole.

8. What are some potential reasons the main character(s) haven't, couldn't, and/or can't pursue these goals yet? Consider other characters, backstory events, circumstances, environmental factors, etc.

In my WIP, my MC’s immediate goal is to escape a life that is causing her pain, but ultimately, her goal is to build a life that brings her joy and meaning.

My October goal is to make significant progress toward finishing my faith deconstruction fic WIP (my third novel overall & first in a new series).

I finished Sept at 50,000 words. My ultimate goal is to complete my first draft of 70-90k words by the end of November.

Also, that sign brought me Detroit Lions fans visiting Cincy for yesterday’s football game. It wasn’t a gimmick — I was born and raised in Detroit, and the FMC in Make Me Free is a native Detroiter.

And I’m a Lions fan. Wish I had worn my Megatron jersey 🩶💙

This weekend, I had a table at Cincinnati Fall Fest in Washington Park. It was a great time. The coolest part was meeting a mom and two kids, and sharing with her curious son (who made a beeline for my *adult* book because of the Jeep 😱) about why I write 💙📚

On top are my books, Make Me Free and To Die Is Gain, a toy Jeep, bookmarks, business cards, flyers, and a felt sandwich board. Thanks!

Faith deconstruction fiction critiques religion, and often includes characters in crises of faith, asking tough questions that lead them to reevaluate or even leave their religion. It’s fiction that encapsulates experiences of exvangelicals, ex-Mos, recovering Catholics & others.
jayepool.bsky.social
Definitely. Meals can tell us a lot about a character’s background, culture, including how in touch — or not — they are with it, & the nature of relationships. In my current WIP, my FMC’s husband is asked to make dinner & he undercooks it as a show of weaponized incompetence.

Does food play a role in your stories? My current WIP uses Sicilian dishes to represent family and community. I’ve never focused on food in previous novels #writingq #WritingCommunity

I’m Jaye & I write literary fiction / women’s fiction. My work also falls under the emerging subgenre of faith deconstruction fiction.

My unnamed (as of yet) WIP is about a woman out of place & haunted by regret, who escapes to a small Michigan town after tragedy strikes.

What is the average age of the most banned books in America?

It's 22.

The most banned books in America are not new books.

Why are they suddenly a problem now? We know. We all know.

That, plus an *extensive* roundup of book censorship news this week.

Snippet from my latest release, To Die Is Gain.

Luke sat in a navy chair against the wall of a light-blue painted waiting room. His head rested on the wall, and his eyes were closed.
Did I wash the dishes?
Did I wash the dishes?
Did I wash the dishes?
I wish these thoughts would go away.
I'm behind on my labs.
I need to stop oversleeping when I have class in the
morning.
Dr. Simmons is gonna fail me, I'm sure of it.
I wish Rachel would clean up behind herself.
Did I wash the dishes?

But when I drink, I sleep late.

The one I started with is Needful Things, and it’s excellent IMO. That said, there might be some triggers in there for some folks as another blueskyer mentioned. Thinner and Christine are good ones as well.
jayepool.bsky.social
The scariest for me is traumatic scenes, esp ones that fall outside my lived experience. Care is key, so I research quite a bit, but I still worry about not getting tone right, or inadvertently writing it in a way that readers find exploitative or insensitive.

#WIPSnips WOTD is salmon 🍣

In my writing, I like using meals as a way to convey the nature of interpersonal relationships. Here’s one snippet 🥣

#writingcommunity #writesky #authorsky #amwriting #salmon
Snippet from my WIP:

Once dinner was ready, Savannah and Abby set the table, and the latter called the children to gather for the meal. Noah got up from the baseball game to sit with his family and their guest while two young girls — a blonde and a redhead — scurried down the staircase and joined the others.

The spread was fit for a king: Salmon soup, Micah's Johnny Marzetti, roasted potatoes, and yeast rolls. Waiting in the wings for dessert, berry crumble and apple pie sat on deck, along with local Loos ice cream in the freezer.

After everyone was served, Abby called out, "It's time to say 'grace."'

I’m more of an HFN (happy for now) girlie. Things change within relationships over time. I have written an HEA once, which IMO worked for the story I told. But thing is, I’m not a “real” romance writer, bc I don’t like being locked into an ending until I get there.
