Excerpt from my litfic / women’s fiction WIP: Once the sun went down, the two sat back as the fireworks show began. Each burst of light illuminated the expansive lake into a mélange of reds, whites, and electric blues. Before Micah could hold herself back, she and Julian leaned in, their lips meeting each other, under the sparkle, the shimmer, the pomp, and the circumstance.

"Many of the businesses here are, uh.. niche. Residents of this community might enjoy them, but these are limited in their appeal and may not reflect the values of potential tourists who might otherwise want to visit." "You may feel that way about Marristone, but with all due respect, that's not my problem. I'm well aware of the auto industry and how it's affected our state. But right now, here in Marristone, our businesses are thriving. The township's commercial occupancy has hovered at around ninety-five percent for at least the past decade. That's pretty damn good."

Snippet from my women’s fiction / litfic WIP: Once Julian left the room, Micah took out her phone and paired it with the radio, setting it to her favorite playlist. She poured the dark paint onto the metal tray, and dipped an unused brush, carefully removing the excess. With each firm stroke of the horsehair, she glistened the antique whitened walls anew. Against the backdrop of the grand, majestic lake, "Voyage to Atlantis" by the Isley Brothers flowed from the robust audio system. Losing herself in the groove, the surface gradually transformed with the labor of her hands. "I could watch you all day," Micah heard through the waves of her own soundtrack.

Snippet from my women’s fiction / litfic WIP: At the helm, he bore down into the waves and steered as much as he could in a southerly direction as the wind blew in from the west. The waves crashed uncontrollably into the boat like a washing machine. The deck splashed with water as she held onto the cool, slick railing, coils of her hair sticking to her face. A particularly high wave rose to meet Micah's gaze. She slid towards Julian's chair, holding on for dear life as it descended onto them. This must be it. Didn't expect to go out in a storm on Lake Superior, but it is what it is.

Once she stepped out of her car, she gave herself a quick once-over — a floral off-white blouse, skinny jeans, and burgundy flats for a pop of color. She grabbed her tan satchel and walked toward her date.

As her teeth crunched the pasta, she looked away from her husband, whose self-satisfied grin evaporated. "What's wrong, honey?" She swallowed the shards of marinara-covered noodles. "Nothing." "I mean, what d'you think about dinner?" "It's not bad..." she trailed off as she attempted to pick up another portion of her meal with scraping tines.

Metro Beach in SE Michigan. It’s a suburban lakeside beach that’s located about 20 minutes from where I grew up (for context, I’ve lived away from my home state for ~25 years). It features in my novels, but I had never visited that park IRL until earlier this year.

It was overcast, but still neat.

Snippet from my exvangelical / women’s fiction WIP: "Micah, you better not renege!" Zaire cautioned in jest. "Girl, this ain't Detroit!" Micah shot back, highlighting her sister-in-law's hometown. "Nah, 'cause in Detroit, we know how to play spades!" As the game went on, it was Steve's turn. He surveyed the cards on the table: Derrick's king of hearts, Zaire's ten of the same suit, and Micah's low three of hearts. As he carefully reviewed his hand, Micah encouraged him, "You've got this, Bear. Remember what I taught you." "Sis, he's new to this. Don't pressure him too hard," Derrick advised. "Let the man think." "Don't worry about him, D. Worry about your team."

The occasional change of scenery is a little treat and motivator to myself. Writing at a local coffeehouse, or the park (on warmer days), are nice motivators. Even, when possible, visiting locations that are in my novels is a real treat.

And I improved on that skill in the US Marine Corps. I taught my son how to shoot, too, and he's damn good. And as Micah's probably told you, she and her brother are close. Now, I believe in the Second Amendment. So does he." Herman swallowed a spoonful of chicken noodle soup. "Just so you know." "I understand."

"I get it, but it's about what you need to know, and if you have the courage to do what you need to do to make your life better, no matter how difficult it might be. Life is too short to be so miserable."

From the Moon I Watched Her by Emily English Medley inspired me to write (again). It was the first faith deconstruction fic I’d read, & I related strongly to it. Also, the complicated relationship between the MC & her mother truly hit home. It compelled me to write my own story.

This weekend, I had a table at Cincinnati Fall Fest in Washington Park. It was a great time. The coolest part was meeting a mom and two kids, and sharing with her curious son (who made a beeline for my *adult* book because of the Jeep 😱) about why I write 💙📚
