It feels like Magic: the Gathering lost the plot when people ignored that much of the balance in the game was inherently financial. Better cards were rarer and pricier, so most could only afford a few per deck, if that.

Man I kinda feel bad for the E33 team. Imagine creating your first game from scratch, winning the most awards of any game at the event ever, and people are just furious about it online.
Criticize the event itself, sure, but those devs did nothing wrong to deserve that hate. They made a good game
