2024 laysoffs estimation is at 14,600 just after a 2023 lineup of massive AAA titles, including Tears of the kingdom, baldurs gate 3.

2025 layoffs estimation is at 3,563 and the lineup is 33/33/33 between AAA, AA and Indie games

I can clearly see a pattern of industry transformation. #goty #games

I've created an auto-tiling system on my PICO-8 project. Is so satisfying when you start using it to create your own levels.

This is part of a Super Mario Maker inspired project 👀

Solo gamedev is overwhelming. I cut through the noise with 5 rules for those willing to start learning but lost on the way to see a realistic path.

[SPOILER]

1. Why small engines beat big ones for learning the fundamentals
2. Logic first, aesthetics later.

There is a hack to design good game feel... It is called algebra.

Smooth and natural gameplay is usually powered by math, but don't be afraid, simple algebra can solve lot of things.

Arkanoi-8 (PICO-8) by Josh Millar collisions are calculated based on trigonometry.

We can't master all the concepts behind gamedev, but we can identify them and go deeper when we need, the same way we would use a dictionary.

I want to introduce you to collisions and physics applied to Arkanoid, save it now, read it anytime later.

You decided to start gamedev, but you feel overwhelmed by Godot, Unity or Unreal? I understand that feeling.

You managed to make progress on Godot, but the scope of your project keeps growing? I've been there.

There are only few community driven videogames on the industry, the first Project Cars is probably the most well known.

Thinking about this concept under a smaller scope. Would you like to contribute with ideas during the design process of a solo gamedev project?

Learning game development isn’t about finding the perfect engine or watching endless tutorials

it’s about small wins, patience, and discipline. Because it is a complex area.

I’ve gathered a few lessons and reflections that might help you stay on track too.

game design is such an embarrassingly human endeavor. you stumble through iterations, lost in the woods like 20 times even tho this happened on your last game. The real magical games somehow feel like… the result of that process. Something was FOUND after the SEARCHING. So cool. Let’s keep doing it
