I worked in the ED for 16 years. I frequently treated patients before I even knew their names, let alone their immigration or insurance status.

I made an effort to find out their names, once they were stable or able to tell me. The rest of it? Get bent if you think I ever gave a fuck.

One of the things I love intensely about @tkingfisher.com is her ability to write the absurdly horrific (horrifically absurd?). It's not just unrelenting horror - it's also ridiculous. Because it has to be. Because that's what real life is like and if you can't laugh at it you go insane. I love it.

I've always taken it to mean literally anything that isn't zero. So not a judgment on likelihood or not, just an acknowledgement that it isn't completely impossible. But I kind of love the ambiguity of then not knowing anything else about the implied probability.
