Heute erscheint mein Buch zur "Politischen Theorie nach Machiavelli" bei Matthes&Seitz Berlin! Es zeigt Machiavelli als Republikaner sowie als frühen Radikaldemokraten und Klassentheoretiker, es folgt Spuren bei Gramsci, Althusser, Pocock, Lefort, Skinner, Abensour, McCormick.

The Weekly Read is "Beyond Sanctuary: The Humanism of a World in Motion," edited by Ananya Roy & Veronika Zablotsky. This collection examines how the liberal democracies of the West rarely grant sanctuary and refuge. Read the entire book now for free.

Cover of Beyond Sanctuary: The Humanism of a World in Motion, edited by Ananya Roy and Veronika Zablotsky. The cover features a photo of a small concrete building painted with red polka dots, set in an arid landscape under a clear blue sky. The house is part of an art installation by Álvaro Enciso, "La Casa de los Puntos Rojos." The image is placed against a black background with minimalist white and pale blue text. Small red dots accent the corners of the design.

In Germany, many people associate Sunday evenings with a popular detective series: Tatort [eng: crime scene]

This Sunday, August 31 at 8PM @medico2.bsky.social turns the spotlight on a real and unresolved crime scene far from Germany’s cities: Shark Island in Namibia @forensicarchi.bsky.social

Isn’t it such a tragedy, what has been done to Fanon’s name? In the 1980s especially, when Fanon is revisited in academia in the West, it’s a real moment of… ignorant exploitation.

The corpus of Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran's father, is vast and rich, but his book "Citizen & Subject" was totally formative for me and many others in its analysis of the long-term legacies of colonialism in Africa (& beyond). Doubly interesting to read now.

Sprachräume der Anteilnahme. Workshop und Gespräch mit Esther Dischereit und Tunay Önder
16.00 Uhr Workshop: Linke Kapelle, HfG Offenbach

The Black Flag Group of some 800 academics in Israel is calling upon the heads of Israeli universities and colleges to mobilize the full weight of Israeli academia to stop the Israeli war in Gaza
We, members of the academic and administrative staff in institutions of higher
education in Israel, call on you to act immediately to mobilize the full weight of
Israeli academia to stop the Israeli war in Gaza.
Israeli higher education institutions play a central role in the struggle against the
judicial overhaul. It is precisely against this backdrop that their silence in the face of
the killing, starvation, and destruction in Gaza, and in the face of the complete
elimination of the educational system there, its people, and its structures, is so striking.
Since Israel violated the ceasefire on March 18, almost 3,000 people have been killed in
Gaza. The vast majority of them were civilians. Since the start of the war, at least
53,000 people have been killed in Gaza, including at least 15,000 children and at least 41
Israeli hostages. At the same time, many international bodies are warning of acute
starvation – the result of intentional and openly declared Israeli government policy – as
well as of the rendering of Gaza into an area unfit for human habitation. Israel
continues to bomb hospitals, schools, and other institutions. Among the war’s declared
goals, as defined in the orders for the current military operation “Gideon’s Chariots,” is
the “concentration and displacement of the population.” This is a horrifying litany of
war crimes and even crimes against humanity, all of our own doing.
As academics, we recognize our own role in these crimes. It is human societies, not
governments, that commit crimes against humanity. Some do so by means of direct
violence. Others do so by sanctioning the crimes and justifying them, before and after
the fact, and by keeping quiet and silencing voices in the halls of learning. It is this
bond of silence that allows clearly evident crimes to continue unabated without
penetrating the barriers of recognition.
We cannot claim that we did not know. We have been silent for too long.

Current Workshop

It is my distinct pleasure to announce that the figure of study for the 2025 Feminist Decolonial Politics Workshop is Joy James. James is the Ebenezer Fitch Professor of Humanities at Williams College. She is author of many books and articles on the topics of antiblackness and genocide, feminism, and abolitionism (among others).

Here is some additional information about the 2025 FDPW workshop:

Location: Villanova University, located just outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (and online)
    Date: June 3-6, 2025
    Time: Approximately 9-5PM each day

The workshop will be primarily organized around three texts in particular, namely:

James, Joy. 1996. Resisting State Violence: Radicalism, Gender, and Race in U.S. Culture. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press.
James, Joy. 2013. Seeking the Beloved Community: A Feminist Race Reader. Albany: SUNY Press.
James, Joy. 2023. New Bones: Captive Maternal Agency and the (After)Life of Erica Garner. Brooklyn: Common Notions.

That said, given the extensiveness of James publications, we intend on in weaving some additional texts. All texts will be made available to the workshop participants electronically.
