writers and publishing professionals on substack have done a lot to make industry machinations transparent. i think there's more ~behind the scenes~ insight available to people than ever before.

but *knowledge* is not the same thing as *access.*

and it's not that i mourn twitter, exactly, because even without el*n buying it, the cesspoolification was already starting.

but i do still mourn the loss of a space where newbie writers didn't *need* to live in nyc or have gone to the right schools or have the right connections to get in the door.

in the way that twitter was a digital water cooler slash homeroom for writers, agents, editors, and media folks alike, it was SUCH a valuable and reasonably democratic proving ground for ideas that had legs

the only reason i ended up doing astrology for writers (which is now a 6-years running NYT-featured newsletter AND forthcoming big 5 book) is bc i would tweet about different writers' birth charts and @esmewang.com and @jesszimmerman.com were like hey but what if you like did this though

same. my agent followed me on twitter bc of my LOTR live tweet. i got ~so many bylines~ through casual tweets where editors would DM asking, would you write about this?

with the collapse of social media, the way i got my foot in the door in this industry is no longer available.

I signed with my agent because I tweeted the idea for a novel. He saw it, was already aware of my work, and thought it was a good time to get in touch. I used to regularly get pitches accepted because of tweets, and editors would often DM to ask "hey if you're serious about _____ lets talk."

The recent ICE raid which emptied an entire apartment building was apparently at the request of Wells Fargo, which is trying to foreclose on the building.

The building is in a 27 million dollar foreclosure filed by Wells Fargo. The next day, Wells Fargo filed an emergency motion for receivership. The fascist regime kindly emptied the building for donor Wells Fargo.
