A small thing, but I am noticing every news outlet that refers to Renee Good’s wife as her “partner.”

So far the BBC’s coverage of the Minnesota killing seems really, really off

Get Verify to verify what happened - NYT, Bellingcat etc already have - and report that
Evan Davis faux scratching his head on PM as to how there can be such different interpretations of clearly documented incidents (the shooting in Minnesota), right after platforming someone from the Heritage Foundation giving a deliberately false interpretation of events, barely challenged.

losing my mind at the "she should have followed directions" people

really? really? you're cool with "if you don't follow directions, they get to kill you"? that seems like a good state of affairs to you? that seems like how law enforcement ought to work: instant obeisance or death?

If Russia can't participate in international sports, why can the US?

Ban them, and move the World Cup to Canada/Mexico.

If Mexico, who border the mad colossus that is the United States, can unequivocally condemn this as an action of aggression then the EU, sheltered by the Atlantic, can do the same and not offer this subservient drivel.

A vulnerable child was groomed and trafficked and then subjected to the most shocking experiences imaginable including the deaths of her babies.

Instead of taking responsibility the British establishment stripped her of her citizenship and dumped her like old rubbish.

Come for the chart of shifting party support, stay for the fury at the fact we're going to have one of the most consequential Scottish (and definitely most consequential Welsh) elections since devolution, yet the Westminster media can't stop speculating about PM Farage in 2029 long enough to care.

If someone says to you, "what are you doing about students' use of AI?" ask them, "do you think that this should be my problem? How good do you think my response can be? Should it not be up to legislators & administrators to defend against a commercial industry's attack on your child's education?"

I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

As plenty of women have always known, it’s easy to sucker a man with a big ego into pretty much anything you want if you just let him bang on about his obsessions, flatter him, and don’t let your own personality intrude.

And it really emphasises how our media just cannot be normal about trans people.

Constant descriptions of Dr. Upton not as a trans woman, but as "a man etc," it's a warped definition of impartiality where acknowledgement of transness at all is "taking a side."

I just find this obsession with "content" and image so *boring*. Yeah sure good comms are important but they don't really work if you've not got anything substantive to say.

Also inoffensive is not the first word that leaps to mind...
How can this inoffensive man have become so viscerally loathed?

Dreadful news.

Where are the media in all of this? UKHE, one of our few great export industries, as well as a vital part of our socio-economic national infrastructure, has been slowly collapsing and now rapidly so.

We're near an old silver mine and explicitly aren't allowed to keep any silver we find in the garden.

Also allowed one 'well behaved' cat or dog. Not sure what we're supposed to do if our cat's a prick.

I'm sure you're very proud of yourselves in the journalism space though, eh? Off you went to learn the trade, bright eyed and idealistic about speaking truth to power, and here you all are just doing The Gay Agenda Is Out To Get Everyone again but subbing in trans people as the target. Mortifying.

I‘ve been listening to Sarah Marshall’s The Devil You Know and it’s so great. She knows this stuff inside out and weaves a tale of so many subjects; the satanic panic (duh), evangelicalism, the patriarchy, media, so much more. Highly recommend.

That's not a compromise. There is no compromise position lurking somewhere between "treat trans people as full and equal members of society" and "treat trans people as second-class citizens". Labour have chosen the latter option.

Bleary-eyed today after a great few days in Cardiff at the #EMCA Doctoral Network meet-up and MCA workshop. Highlights include analysing the I Think You Should Leave hotdog sketch, a burrata and truffle pizza, and a chat in the pub that solved a problem I've been having re. defining key concepts.
