Another feather in my cap about how losing the UMTA and its huge research arm was the true origin of the American inability to build transit at reasonable cost

Here are the Subway/Metro Station design guidelines that were compiled by UMTA/USDOT in the 1970s in an attempt to prevent WMATA-style cost overruns again.

It got shelved when everyone at UMTA got laid off and we forgot it. But it's prescient about cost drivers -- rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/11352

Ah yep, misread your quote from the article. One of many work rules needing reform...

Mandatory minimum pay feels pretty tame as far as LIRR work rules go? Isn't this pretty standard across the railroad industry? I know some friends in freight who always are happy when they get called, end up working like 3 hours, but make a full day's pay regardless

It's an ad from Pan Am, which hasn't existed in 35 years

Absolutely wild ad pull on an M3 today, I think car 9876?
Tattered Pan Am Shuttle ad stuck onto the back wall of a railcar with woodgrain paneling

Today, Saul Zabar passed away. For more than 70 years, he was the principal owner of the legendary Zabar’s market in #NYC. This #NYTMCollection image captures the Zabar’s storefront in 1957, twenty-three years into its time in business and seven years into Saul Zabar’s tenure.

DC is like the fourth largest metro area in the country by most metrics. It's not some provincial backwater

Never thought I'd see the day. Can't wait for the more intense phase of this next year with the proper bus islands and more center lanes further down

Recorded a 50 minute timelapse of the new Flatbush Ave center running bus lanes this first rush hour, as DOT crews are still installing signage and stuff.

So far, it works! Drivers generally obey it and buses are clearly sped up. And don’t miss that ambulance bypassing traffic at the 6 second mark!

And one of those sides' service is being actively harmed by the volume of illegal minibuses parking in the way of actual transit buses. But there's no clear right or wrong here!
jeremyzorek.bsky.social
Genuinely having seen the volume of dollar vans on Flatbush, they contribute to the B41's unreliability, and are constantly double parked in the actual bus lanes. Someone with a more conspiratorial mind might even think they are trying to attract customers by harming MTA service.

nobody talking about sacred machines is talking about telephony equipment and they ought to be, like all of this metal was directly connecting your ear to someone's gaping maw and into literal orbit and back while simultaneously handling hundreds more. and it sounds like this it's like a critter
