First generation immigrants (parents) earn less than the local born. But the next generation (children of immigrants) close most of these income gaps.

More land animals than ever before are slaughtered for meat.

Recent estimates indicate that globally, most animals are raised on factory farms. In the US, where better data and research are available, 99% of livestock is factory-farmed.

One thing I admired Americans for was they provided efficient and effective aid for people around the world.

I thought this made America great.

The PEPFAR program saved plausibly about 25 million lives and prevented at least 5.5 million babies from being born with HIV.

Earlier this week I did a long interview with the Belgian newspaper DeMorgen.

It’s out today. I just arrived in Belgium and found it at the newsstand. They illustrated it really nicely with some Our World in Data charts.

Just imagine how much progress we could make on climate change just by stopping these subsidies. Let alone if we subsidised clean alternatives by this much.
How much subsidies do fossil fuels receive?

Estimates range from less than $1 trillion to $7 trillion globally.

Where do these numbers come from? Which countries give the highest subsidies to fossil fuels?

People often claim low-carbon energy is a *bigger* risk to energy security than fossil fuels because of the need for minerals.

I don't think so.

I explained why in an old Substack: www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/energy-sec...

If we let these people become this rich and tax them only within a decade, we'd have so much more money to build housing, redistribute among the poor and make the world more just
While many struggle to make ends meet, the wealth of the super-rich has soared. It doesn’t have to be this way. There’s another way—one that prioritises fairness, sustainability, and equality. It starts with making those at the top pay their fair share.

Democrats say Biden was the victim of a global post-pandemic trend

Inflation has been pretty much the same in all advanced countries, which sure seems to support the Democratic narrative that Biden’s policies weren’t responsible

Activists have been saying for years that there are no such things as "rich countries" and "poor countries." Many countries are no longer poor but aren't quite rich either. So why is this #cop29 so focused on sending money from "rich" to "poor" countries? So which countries are we talking about?

Many European countries — including France, Spain, and Norway — have now lower CO2 emissions per capita than China.

This is adjusted for trade and based on what the people in these countries consume.

This is a great figure. For all the doom & gloom about climate inaction, we have made a big dent over the past 25 years.

What started out as 3.5-4°C increase by 2100 is now down to 2-3°C. Of course, more work is urgently needed but this is progress! We don't let up now. h/t @hausfath.bsky.social
