A local example of one of the many reasons why I’m so adamantly against generative AI.
This is so awful. St. John's author Trudy Morgan-Cole was horrified to find out she is one of millions of authors whose work is being used to train Meta's AI language model. "Writers have been given no opportunity to say yes or no, and certainly no compensation," she said. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Meta is using pirated books to train AI — including those by N.L. authors | CBC News
Artificial intelligence can’t do the dishes or the laundry, but it can replicate the writing style of just about any author, including those from Newfoundland and Labrador.

What if the US-Canada trade war motivates communities to invest in local food production systems? Can we create more community gardens on private and public land, tackle massive food wastage with evidence-based diversion programs, and make ourselves less dependent on fragile global supply chains?

"Now what can a regular person do to push cities and states to fill the growing federal void? A lot. I share heaps of examples in my book What If We Get It Right? But, for now, let’s focus on just one key action: Join a local environmental group." - @ayanaeliza.bsky.social
What a horrifying doozy these first two weeks of the Trump administration have been. YOWZA. I’ve been pacing myself by focusing on climate policy, since it’s nearly impossible to keep up with everything. Here, in @rollingstone.com, is what I’m thinking so far:

What Now for Climate Under Trump? Act Locally
Trump is working to sabotage climate solutions — but there’s a lot regular people can do to push cities and states to fill the growing federal void.

They know the executive order is illegal, it's not designed to survive a challenge.

They are blaring a message designed to get people to censor themselves and throw their colleagues under the bus and fall in line.

If you have a smidge of power and you catch yourself thinking:

Maybe we'll be safe if we:
- tone this justice program a bit
- take that 'decolonization' reference off the website
- nix that grant for decarbonization...

know that you are playing your part in Trump's game perfectly.

“We live in capitalism, its power seems inescapable — but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words.”

What's your favourite piece for discussing grades / ungrading with students? I typically use Kohn's "The Case Against Grades," but I'm looking for pieces with more recent research or with a different audience.
