An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

But, your open access journal will never be as highly ranked as the corporate managed journals. That's because the ranking system primarily serves corporate interests and is an illusionary measurement of "impact," which can't really be quantified.
jjrs-nirc.bsky.social
If you could get out of your agreements with these big companies and move the journal to open access along with back issues, that would help with rankings. It is the journal that is ranked, not the company. They just provide the infrastructure and marketing that helps the ranks.

It is still possible to do this today, but you will have to the marketing, finance, and technical aspects of publishing yourself. This might take some $$, but mostly it requires a lot more time in addition to editing. That's why most editors prefer to outsource the work to companies like T&F.

We have been doing this for decades. Thanks to the foresight of our predecessors, our journals and books were made available open access online back in the 90s. Having a long history of online availability, allowed us to be listed in indices and databases like JSTOR.

I was just talking to a colleague today about bypassing the publishing industry. We do all the unpaid labour anyway, and we don't get paid for the content, and it's going to be sold to "ai" companies anyway, so let's just make books ourselves, slap ISBN's on them, and then put them on our CV's.

Academic authors, here's a peek into the black box of journal publishing from an journal editor if you can bear it:

KDPAmazon is now telling us that our book is in Dutch, so we should change the metadata to Dutch and select “Dutch” in the language options. Dear Readers, our book doesn’t include a single word in Dutch.

Absolutely losing my mind trying to deal with @awscloud.bsky.social support. There doesn’t seem to be any humans working there anymore.

It’s August! Which means we are on summer break. Which means we can finally get some work done. Spoiler alert: we will be too busy to get any work done.

In case anyone else asks:

Yes, the date of the issue is 2024.

Yes, we are late.

Yes, we are now back on schedule, and the next publication will be the 2025 volume.

Getting some of my editorial mojo back. NOTE: citing relevant literature is not the same thing as laying out a compelling argument or posing a provocation to the discipline.

Never post unpublished materials on such sites. Doing so not only disqualifies the manuscript for publication in a journal or volume, but it means your work is unprotected and can be poached by anyone with access to that site.
jjrs-nirc.bsky.social
We have been contacted a few times by prospective authors asking if they could submit a manuscript that they had already posted to the account on the site. Of course, the answer is no you cannot submit the manuscript because you already self-published it on this site.
jjrs-nirc.bsky.social
I confirmed it was fake, and contacted the site in question, asking them to remove these copyright violating documents. They said they would “send a notification to the author, but it was not their responsibility.”

The committee thought it looked suspicious because the content had nothing to do with Japanese religions. It turns out, the applicant photoshopped our header onto an unpublished manuscript and claimed we had published it. They did this with three or four manuscripts with the JJRS and NIRC headers.

A couple years ago we received a message about an article posted on the site discussed below. The chair of a hiring committee wanted to confirm that an applicant had published an article with us, as they claimed on their CV. The CV included a link to the applicants account on that site.

Don’t want it, didn’t approve or ask for it, misconstrues my thesis, says my name wrong, makes weird jokes about sushi pizza and my area of expertise in a British man’s voice. Sooo do I delete my account now? What is it even good for anymore #AcademicSky
