Say what you will about city councillors, but they generally have a pretty good sense for when issues are radioactive with voters. I've seen no signs of any worry in this debate — even from the suburbanites — that support for speed cameras will cost them support in next year's election.

Time for speakers on the speed cams. "Speed kills," says Mayor Olivia Chow. She lists examples of people who lost their lives to speeding drivers in Toronto.

"Each tragedy is a painful reminder that behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community that is forever changed."

Text from Matt Elliott's City Hall Watcher on October 6, 2025

MM33.5 - In light of the provincial government’s distaste for new bike lanes, Councillor Shelley Carroll is moving to put a pin in the construction of cycling infrastructure on Sheppard East between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street. “Proceeding with the tender and construction of this project prior to receiving provincial approval may risk the project being halted or the infrastructure being removed at the direction of the Minister, resulting in wasted public funds and further project delays,” says Carroll. Cycling advocate Robert Zaichkowski thinks Council should stand firm and push forward with the procurement process.

My real dream is to get a few people on board to either come for the ride or meet me in Niagara, and rent a place for a couple nights and do (much more chill) bike tourism there. 🙂
jocelynsquires.bsky.social
I ride to or from Hamilton a few times a year and I've always taken a different route starting from Oakville. What you took here is much more direct, I think not as pleasant, but I'm curious to try it.
jocelynsquires.bsky.social
Great summary and thanks for posting the route! I think I'm in a similar band of being comfortable with 70 - 110. This was going to be a next year goal, but if the weather holds I may even try it in the next couple weeks.

Infill housing is climate action. More people need to live in the blue zones. Excellent to see @jasonthorne.bsky.social posting this; leaders, take note.

shoutout to all the talented designers (including fern) who made these cool little signs back in april, and brought them today - this sparked the convo about wayfinding in the first place!

really exciting win fully owed to @ttcriders.bsky.social volunteers passionate about wayfinding 😊

They're doing such great work -- and also an incredible job of making the information accessible and easy to understand!

In case anyone is wondering what McGrath means by accounting fiction: TPA makes a "profit" only if you don't include its capital budget and ignore that the maintenance and resurfacing for on-street parking is paid for by Transportation Services.

401 Richmond alone reports 24,000 people came by thru bldn last night during nuit Blanche. What a validation of the desire for public life in this city. Toronto seemed so lit last evening. Every year there’s grumps curmudgeons & naysayers but people come out for NB, esp this year. A renewal.

Increasingly convinced that we need to be doing more policy design not around density but around _compactness_ — land uses clustered together in a contiguous way. Which in turn makes it structurally possible to get between more places without a car

Congratulations @cycletoronto.bsky.social for hosting a fantastic Big Bike Ride - it is awesome that the #BikeTO community raised over $50,000! It was a treat to ride with everyone 🌟💕🚲

Nice!!! I need to look more carefully at the route, I thought it was closer to 160km. Will definitely put that in my list for next year. Thanks for sharing!

Dirt = no wildlife. Coyotes eat pets, bird poop destroys trees, plain flat dirt is the best solution for the urban environment.

🤩 That's on my bucket list! I've done the Niagara Peninsula (about 100km with the route I take), with a to/from on GO, once a year since pandemic days. I thought the ride to Niagara was longer which is why I haven't tried it yet, what's your destination?

Stumbled on both a bike rave AND a normal rave. Nuit Blanche is such an important lynchpin for creative communities in the city.

The identifiably Toronto trash cans were covered. I assumed it referenced the erasure of Toronto's identity in film, the subject of an excellent installation. But it actually was because they can't handle the levels of trash.
jocelynsquires.bsky.social
With themes of cultural erasure brought up in several installations, I liked the choice for the pedestrianized area being in Chinatown. It also links the festival to the AGO. (One of the City Hall installations even referenced the displacement of Chinatown in the construction of City Hall.)
jocelynsquires.bsky.social
Art is great, but the real reason I love Nuit Blanche is the people in the streets. It's also amazing to see people sitting everywhere this evening -- partly because of the warmth, but partly also because there's more seating in the city than there used to be.
