I have been trying to get this published as an op-ed, but I am going to post it here since I think it is timely in light of the "consent" extortion events.

We've got hundreds of signatures in five hours... but if we can cross 1000 by morning when I send this to NSF that'd be great. The stories from past, current, and future applicants in the comments section are hearbreaking. Keep up the pressure, and please please sign!!!

NSF unexpectedly changed (at the last minute) who is eligible to apply for the Grad Research Fellowship, dropping 2nd year students. We started a petition to reverse this unfair change, Sign here:

Are animals randomly distributed in the air, or is there a structure to where and when we find them? In our new paper we outline factors that shape habitat use in the air, from abiotic structure to biotic interactions. A lot of fun discussions behind this one! 🦅🦋🦇🌬

I'm looking for PhD students to join the lab starting August 2026. We study the evolution of insect chemical signals so if you're interested in evolutionary biology, chemical ecology, molecular biology, behavior, or genetics, this could be a good fit for you! More info here: tinyurl.com/mrxchwfm

Animals don’t just live in their environments—they transform them. And in doing so, they may also shape their own evolutionary trajectories. Our new paper in Trends in Ecology & Evolution introduces a framework for zoogeochemical niche construction. A thread 👇

RFK must go. Please contact your congresspeople about this. Ask them why RFK was allowed to unilaterally fire a senate appointee because she contacted senators – the appropriate oversight body – after the HHS secretary demanded that she break the law & betray Americans’ public health.
As long as he stays in office, the American public has to assume that their public health is being actively threatened. A current CDC employee put it starkly:
People will die because of this. We won't be able to get out guidance or get out funding for public health departments or get out vaccines.
We're going to be sicker as a country, not as effective, waste resources. And for what? I don't understand.

Hello. I wrote a nice long essay about AI and this very strange moment where we're constantly told we're living in the dawn of a strange new future but the only thing that's actually clear is that everyone feels pretty unmoored and uncertain. I hope you'll read it
AI Is a Mass-Delusion Event
Three years in, one of AI’s enduring impacts is to make people feel like they’re losing it.

I don't think we can put the toothpaste back in the tube at this point. But I think we can maybe get to a point where we recognize that AI, like toothpaste, is best used in scant amounts for specific, relatively infrequent tasks, rather than slathered indiscriminately all over everything.

Hopefully this retraction (along with other recent papers casting doubt on the promise of AI for productivity) means we've reached the peak of the AI hype cycle.
