Everything's quite new here at #bsky, so perhaps a quick intro could be useful.

Abt science, published this book recently (with 2 colleagues): An attempt at a theoretically plausible evolutionary trajection of a world with a little culture to a world where culture is human nature 1/n

Am slowly making my way through this paper. And it is an impressive body of work by a collection of great researchers.

However, I have a couple of problems with it...

I usually don't do film tips, but if you're into birding (I think any kind of bird appreciation suffices), or subcultures, then Listers is not a bad documentary.

South Texas game cam catches a raccoon riding a javelina (Dicotyles tajacu).

The deer feeder corn attracts a lot of other species, but maybe we should worry about them all teaming up against us?

(📷: Jeff Davis, TAMU-Kingsville alumni forum)
On a black and white game cam, three javelinas are browsing corn while a raccoon sits on one of their backs. The lighting produces laser-eyes in the raccoon, who is secretly one of the X-Men. A raccoon knight on a javelina steed. "Onward, Pigasus! Let us show them the meaning of haste". Motion blurred, black and white game cam shot.

We got a reply on our Sequence Bottleneck-paper! Jacobs et al. argue that many observations go against our suggestion, see:
www.cell.com/trends/cogni...
Not surprisingly, I guess, we argue that their examples don't really cut to the chase. Our full response here:

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

Now in high impact journal, crows learn new behaviors through trial-and-error. Ignoring Skinner for now, let's reiterate Tinbergen in The Study of Instinct: Animals must learn to i) do new things, & to ii) refine existing behaviors. Our five cents on this: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...

I'm still shook by this, it's like 5 mice taking down a lion, but the lion can fly 😳
Yellow jacket next to a crevice in a wooden post, out of which a pseudoscorpion is grabbing the antennae of the wasp to hold it down Wider view, with another pseudoscorpion poking out of the crevice to grab at the yellow jacket's stinger basically?? Closer shot of the the previous pseudoscorpion whose latched onto the yellow jacket's posterior, and a pale small baby pseudoscorpion is getting in on the action
