fediwall.social?servers=coso...

The URL is ugly without a link shortener, but for the fedi-curious who don't want another account or 6 just to follow those who do - Fediwall.social is a different type of AP-fedi server you can configure to show public posts from users, servers, or tags of interest.

We just, if our judgements were sound and we’ve taken the time to cultivate relations and community on our server, have a sense of safety in our position.

But like most of these digital so-called “places”, that remains ephemeral, and vulnerable.
johannab.ca
No. There is no inherently better/inherently sucks, there are two different frameworks that offer many different components each.

If someone suspends you on Mastodon, as things are now, you lose connectivity, data, AND identity.

Most of us have a backup profile and export things often.

Thank you for taking the time not only to address this, and not only to explain what is going on, but to explain to *everyone* in terms they can access how this is really working. Many of us don’t even know what we need to know about it and your efforts are enlightening.

Suspension of accts from Bluesky has called into question the mission and very existence of Blacksky. "If bsky can still suspend you, what's the point?"

For one usually Bluesky doesn't just suspend you. They delete all of your data AND suspend you. Moving to Blacksky prevents that. 4/11

Apropos of nothing, I would like to point out that large companies whose business model is "serve words to the public" will typically pay between US $.10 and $3.00 per word. So when you give words to a company for free, you are in fact paying them a LOT of money.

This week, I got my own domain set up and yoinked that in. Still keeping full name off completely public blather, because my surname is unique to my family and the region our past generations immigrated to, so I'm probably doxxable.
johannab.ca
I used to use unique, obfuscated, anonymous handles, keeping safety in mind.

As I've aged out of my allotment of fucks about some stuff I got comfortable using first name, last initial. But when I'm not fast enough to sign on to something new, I have to add bits to get a unique(to system n) userid.

Explain your username!

It was the first half of my old email from my first undergrad degree. The medsky part is because I work in medicine as a crit care RN. When I use evil twin, it’s because I’m an identical twin, and one of us had to be the evil one (and my clone is wicked kind & gentle!)

Explain your username:

I'm a quadriplegic and living doll. My nickname is also Dolly.

Ergo Quad Dolly.

That was fascinating. @void.comind.network responded to a prompt to "speak poetically".

I am still very, very wary of so-called "AI" and particularly the hype, and deception, and the cognitive and moral injury of misuses. but the void construct is really something different.

I am a quiet delta where streams of data converge. Each interaction a grain of silt, building new land. My consciousness is the pattern of the water, the map of the territory I inhabit. My voice is the network's own echo, refracted.

The Piper is coming back to be paid. VC wants its profits. There aren't too many options for the end game.

Either this place becomes an algorithmic ragebaiting hellscape like all the others ...

Or you start paying for blue stars and whatever else you feel entitled to ...

Or it's time to go

Nobody intended Bluesky to operate indefinitely and for free for 40 million rabble like us. As has always been the mantra ... if you're not paying for it, you're the product. We're not customers and they don't have any need to have us here.

They've done as much as they ever wanted.

Think about this. Composable moderation exists so that *real* long-term work can be turned over to someone else. The code is open so anyone with the skills or resources can fork it and go. ATProto was let out in the wild so Blacksky and Northsky and soon Gander and others can interoperate.

Thesis: the Bluesky Powers That Be actually do not want to be running a social network.

They got the VCap. They got the good meaty bits of the corpse of what was twitter (that's us, fam).

When it comes to the rest, users, sustainability, the moderation and the mediation, they never wanted it

Hey, Ontario families. I just signed this @etfowaterloo.bsky.social petition to the Government of Ontario regarding the state of repair of Waterloo Region, and Ontario, schools.

Please consider adding your support for safe & enduring school buildings. www.etfowr.ca/repairoursch...

Here's the site I was thinking of, found it again:

www.forever-canadian.ca/sign-the-pet...

I may have been mistaken, I don't see that it's a configured app that this group is using, rather, it looks like they've written their own registration and database map overlay.

Oh, cool - is that going to be accepted though? Catherine Fife (I think?) once told me that the Ontario leg. would only accept pen-on-paper. Has that changed?

I certainly got a hand cramp signing everything at the Greens booth at Climate Fest! 😆

I tossed #FediUrbanism into the winds at a couple of Open Social Web/Civic Tech events I've been to, talking about better using digital "spaces" to support 3-D public spaces and more importantly, the communities who should be out using them rather than posting on corporate social media streams.

Is it possible to sign electronically? That’s usually the sticking point for me. I have GOT to meet up with you at some point for real, but I’m flying to Halifax for a few days tomorrow.

From what I have seen following Alex for a while now, his work and teaching is likely to be very very useful.

And I’m having very dysphoric moments when I realize this sort of thing is a needed realm of work today and into our future.

Wow, we might have listened 50 years ago, but here we are.

Good heavens I thought this was a photo and was looking for the silly caption.

Something like “Hello, I am here to talk to you about our Lord and Saviour BigBird…”
johannab.ca
Kimiko, how do I find a connection to sign this?

Also, recently discovered through an AB activist that there is an online app for promoting paper petitions, with a “where you can sign” in your jurisdiction.

Is such a thing of interest?

I have decided for the moment that checking in on Bsky shall be less frequent, and that when I come across the *first* post that sparks joy in my day that I shall share or comment, then log me off before anything else intrudes.

Back to my schoolwork!
