One of my toxic traits is writing fight scenes where the hero gets their ass absolutely beaten in. This is spoilery, but redacted to make it slightly less spoilery...but still big book 5 spoilers 😅.

“Don’t speak as if you know anything about this, brat!” [redacted] words were practically a roar. She stepped in, throwing a deep cross.
Natalia tried to seize the limb to pull [redacted] into a throw, but [redacted] shrugged off the attempt without so much as tensing. The next hit was a close-range uppercut to Natalia’s gut, and as all of her organs shivered from the impact, she crumpled to the ground despite her best efforts to remain standing.
Outmatched. Outclassed.
She could hardly breathe as [redacted] mounted her, the [redacted]’s full weight pinning her against the floor.
“I tried to be understanding,” [redacted] growled, and though Natalia had enough wherewithal to keep her hands up, [redacted] still managed to strike her across the face with an open-palm that left her seeing stars.
For the next few moments, Natalia couldn’t hear anything at all, but awareness returned slowly, dimly, and with it, [redacted]’s voice. “I didn’t want to hurt you, but I’m sick of your arrogance. If you’re so interested in tasting defeat, then go ahead. Drink it in!”
She struck again at Natalia’s head, and though Natalia managed to soften a number of the blows with her arms, a couple slipped through, causing her skull to bounce against the ground beneath it. She managed to keep her teeth clenched together to avoid biting her tongue, but she heard a crunch, jaw aching with what felt like a loosened tooth.
Well. At least she’d managed to make [redacted] lose her cool.

The short story “Babyland” from The Horrors of Small Town Nebraska.

The sound of a baby crying echoed through the cemetery. Garret startled, but waved it off. “Geez that’s loud,” he whispered. “Probably coming from the apartments.” He gestured with his thumb the direction he had just come.
The sound of the baby crying died down.
Something squeaked near him. He turned around and saw a small swing set near the tombstones. It wasn’t windy, but the swings were moving back and forth as if someone were playing on them. He swallowed thickly, but swore to himself that he wasn’t scared. He walked away from the angel statue and started looking down at the tombstones around him.
A lot of them said “Infant of” and then someone’s name. There were also lots of toys and flowers on the graves.

“May I spend the day with you?”

Her eyelids fluttered open, meeting the light in Ashrah’s eyes, so tender but bright enough to light up the entire room. “I’ll sleep, and you’ll get bored.”

“I will not.” She laid her head against Nitara’s chest. Closed her eyes. “Your body on mine, it warms me. But this fire does not hurt. I hear your heart beating, so close to my empty chest, and for these moments, it is as if I have a heart, too.”

Nitara stroked her cheek, marvelling at the peace glowing on Ashrah’s face, a face that had been the stage for so much anger and pain. “You don’t need a heart to be who you are. To love. You know that, right?”

Ashrah opened her eyes, tilting her head up to look at Nitara. A smile formed on her lips, and Nitara followed its curve with the pad of her finger. “I know.”

“Then I will be your heart. If you will be my soul.”

I battle to ground myself as her hand rises slowly, and I don’t move when she cups my jaw. Her thumb drags across my lips, then inside my mouth and over my teeth, down the long points. I’m trembling.
“Am I in danger?” she whispers.
“No,” I answer truthfully. I don’t want to hurt her, despite urges that hang on the periphery—very present, but not demanding. I want other things more. This is fun, not food.
“I believe you,” she says.
Her hands brush down my arms and no goosebumps rise, even though shivers chase her fingers as she brings my hands to her hips. Now that I have permission, I draw in and kiss her with purpose. She’s quick with the buttons on my shirt, then pauses to take in my tattoos. I have many, and they are miscellaneous. She takes my hand, then we walk to the bedroom.
I let her explore me, every inch she wants, and she does it with grave intensity, like there’s going to be a test later. This is a pleasure all its own, because my hyperactive vampire senses are keenly awake. Each caress is electric; I have never been so sharply stimulated, and I’m impatient for more while enjoying every second of it. When Annie finally looks into my eyes, it’s with a question.
