New flyer just dropped--spread the word with healthcare folks and among disabled adults. Download at link.

Do you or a loved one have a disability? The rights to treatment at hospitals doctors offices and more are in danger. Texas versus Becerra is an active lawsuit seeking to get rid of section 504, part of a 1973 civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. Section 504 protects disabled people's right to enter and receive services and accommodations (example: ramps ASL interpreters Braille captions screen readers) anywhere that receive federal funding or grants. This includes public schools, doctors and hospitals that take Medicaid Medicare and many more basic services. 17 states are currently signed on to the lawsuit but if 504 is struck down it will have a national effect. The suits status is due to be updated 25 February 2025. The good news? There's still time to fight! The fact that there’s a cap on how much money disabled people can make but not a cap on how much billionaires can make is part of what’s wrong with this country.

It’s been a long time coming… so thrilled to share the cover (and Oxford UP website last in 🧵) for my book, _Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America_, pub date 7.2.25 (but will ship, so they say very enticingly, mid-June. 1/ #VastEarlyAmerica 🗃️
Book cover with various kinds of evidence of family history arrayed around the author and title, the latter is _Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America_. The kinds of materials include printed texts, manuscripts, a red book (shhhhh that figures largely in the Introduction!), a watercolor family record, Fraktur, gravestone, and a sampler. One repeated text says "born free, born free (etc)"

The world's richest man managed to take $190 million away from a *child cancer research center* with his posts yesterday. Funding now stripped in the new bill.

As an Indian, my contempt for (rich white) anti-vaxxers in the west is so deep I often cannot quite find the words to express my contempt.
I grew up seeing polio-disabled children and adults crawling over rubble and roads in India.
My father worked for the Pulse Polio program.
What is happening?

Poster with black and white image of a shirtless skinny white person with a beard, moustache and balck cap sitting on the lap of a tattooed, shirtless skinny white person with short dark hair who is sitting in an advanced wheelchair. Behind them are photos on a white wall. The text reads: DISBAILITY JUSTICE AND QUEER CRIP ART CURATION With Author and Curator Kenny Fries. 23.01.2025. Begins at 4PM | Dunton Tower 2017, Carleton University. In partnership with the Department of History, Cultural Mediations, and the School for Studies
in Art and Culture, join Kenny Fries for an evening discussing the intersections between queer and disability histories. We will explore depictions of "the perfect body" in queer communities,
and how individuals who identify as both queer and disabled have been integrating these histories through art. MORE INFORMATION: FIONNUALABRAUN@CMAIL.CARLETON.CA

Hi! I'm a historian of women and gender, health, and politics! Finally deactivated on the bad place. My excuse for delaying was promotion for my new book, Blue: A History of Postpartum Depression. But the amazing new energy here made it easy. press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...
Blue
A powerful look at the changing cultural understanding of postpartum depression in America.   New motherhood is often seen as a joyful moment in a woman’s life; for some women, it is also their lowes...
