Congress just loudly rebuked Trump on his rancid Epstein cover up.

Now it must rebuke him for attempting to surrender Ukraine to Putin. Let’s work together to deliver a very loud vote of “no confidence” in the days ahead.

The narrowing of what we imagine as "the liberal arts" to a subset of humanities subjects (literature, philosophy, art, etc.) should be rejected.

The liberal arts in fact embrace *the whole range* of non-pre-professional subjects, including the natural sciences.

That's the vision we should defend.

in case you're wondering, "what's the harm in claiming an extinct species has been brought back from the dead" when it most certainly has not, our interior secretary is already using it to justify taking animals off the endangered species list

Today is the anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Let me tell you a story about a Shinto priest who returned to the evacuation zone to tend to shrines cut off from human contact by fallout. Through his struggle you can sense how much we lost on 3/11. blog.hirokoyoda.com/p/the-priest...

Here I react to the shameful encounter between American leaders and media and the Ukrainian president. No doubt there were more, but I saw five failures on our side: of hospitality, decency, democracy, strategy, and independence. Please watch and share.

The Okhostk culture thrived in northern Hokkaido from the fifth to ninth centuries and may have provided the Ainu with some of their best-known rituals.

The Mighty Thor and the Failure of Masculinity

My new @thewildhunt.bsky.social column is on folks who identify as straight white men, obsess over masculinity, enjoy AI images of sweaty Vikings, and are always angry

I suggest how myths of Thor might help us out

I just have to post this #iceage masterpiece from time to time: A tiny (3.7 cm) but amazing figurine of a woolly mammoth carved in mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago.
Found in the Vogelherd cave on the Swabian Jura, south-west Germany.

Snowhenge 2024. Every year since 2013 (except twice when the temps didn't cooperate), Patrick @ptmalloy.bsky.social has constructed his Snowhenge on Solstice night (or as near as possible, weather permitting) on the frozen Cedar River near our house. He missed his calling as an environmental artist.

When I wrote this piece in 2022, I deliberately chose to use Japanese words for shukyo (religion) and kami (divine beings). "Religion" has a lot of Western baggage, and when you use God or gods instead of kami, you are back on Western spiritual ground again. www.newyorker.com/culture/cult...
