Heart: I just want people to like me.

Brain: But you say weird things.

Haunted doll under my bed: And your forehead is always shiny.

Ew ew ew just for an ad for one of those AI assistants in which a woman asks it to write a haiku about her cat.

You can’t write a 3 line, 17 syllable poem about your cat?????

What is being alive for if not writing tiny little poems about your cat??!!

Add this to my joker file. Good lord.

I do want Transgender for Everyone.

I want everyone to have full personal and bodily autonomy.

I want everyone to have the freedom to determine who they are for themselves and not have this dictated by other people.

Everyone is the expert on themselves. Self-determination is a fundamental right.

On Thursday, Oct 9th, we'll be donating net proceeds from all sales in-store and online to the Feral Crust Infoshop in Davao, Philippines. This longstanding eco-anarchist project is a living experiment based on principles of mutual aid, cooperation and ecology. 2/
Text overlaid on a photo of book displays inside Firestorm Books. It reads "Anarchists are organizing for ecological resilience in Davao, Philippines. Firestorm is donating proceeds on Thursday to support them!" Alongside the text is the logo of Feral Crust Infoshop, an illustration of wolves surrounded by flames in silhouette.

After Hurricane Helene, we promised ourselves that we wouldn't go through another disaster without a battery backup for our rooftop solar. Thanks to the folks at Footprint Project, we're on track to install 20kWh of battery capacity for our building this month! 🌞

So now want to pay it forward… 1/
An aerial photo of Firestorm Books, a big green building on Haywood Road, shows that the flat roof is covered in solar panels.

I've been seeing my favorite fuzzy friends around! 🍂🐛
Illustration of a wooly (sometimes spelled woolly) bear caterpillar. It's fuzzy and cute and has a happy little smile. There's lines radiating around it and above it says "it's wooly time!" in lowercase hand lettering. The background is a light orange checkered pattern.

people griping about the US being in an era of adult cartoons that hold the hand of the viewer's inner child, but I don't think that's really the whole picture...and even if it was, I think a lot of adults here need that right now,

This article is so haunting. Even in war, forced famine, and genocide, people turn to their animals.
I can still remember hearing Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant describe us as “human animals.” The phrase was meant to strip Palestinians of our dignity.

But it failed.

Neither we nor our animals should endure this cruelty. And yet, even under genocide, we carry our animals with us. We keep them alive, just as they keep us alive. What Israel’s leaders cannot understand is this: Our bond with animals is the deepest proof of our humanity. We are bombed together, starved together, displaced together. Yet we do not abandon one another. Our love for them, their love for us, is humanity in its purest form.

HARD AGREE

deeper in this thread you will see someone trying to pull the "I hate to say it but the majority of the country is not going to die on the hill of trans rights" nonsense. ok well fuck you, i WILL die on this hill. Eaton is saying it nicely. i will be mean about this

Trans rights are civil rights. If you aren't willing to die on the hill of trans rights, then you aren't willing to die on the hill of Black rights. Of Jewish rights. Of disabled rights. Of gay rights. Of anyone's rights. Human rights.

I hate to say it but the majority of the country is not going to die on the hill of trans rights. We can’t protect ANY groups if we can’t win a national election, so purity tests only serve to make specific groups feel triumphant. That’s not “erasing” them; it’s long-horizon strategy.

I’m reading on Wikipedia about how bearded vultures not only drop bones onto rocks to break them open for the marrow but also sometimes do this to their live prey (like tortoises!), and I’m yelling “he’s kind of cute…but he’s a murderer!” like Leslie Jordan.
Screenshot from a Tiktok the late Leslie Jordan did where he reacted to a character onscreen by saying “he’s kind of cute…but he’s a murderer!”

Staying focused on our recovery identity & goals is a tough ask when we're head f*cked about our level of dependence or powerlessness in the moment. Don't let it melt you down. Breathe; blink; focus; & start at the top, reminding yourself who you are & what your life's all about.

There's too much to focus on here in Chicago to be on my "Amazon is even worse than you think" soapbox this week, but here's a sample of the ways that they are profiting off of genocide and occupation, both here and abroad. Kill the cop on your doorstep (your Ring camera).
skunkcabbagebooks.bsky.social
idk that this ever got shared here, but the last few years we've made some little zines in honor of a certain day named for a number indivisible by other numbers. tbh I did not have the bandwidth to update it this year, but these two remain relevant. Check out our website for citations.
"What Amazon is doing to us. a digital zine from Skunk Cabbage Books." We all know by now that Amazon is bad for small businesses, especially indie bookstores like us. Amazon's model, on the surface, looks like this - Amazon sells books at the lowest possible prices because they're willing to sell them at a loss to get their consumers into higher margin products like Kindles, Alexa devices, Ring cameras, and Prime accounts. We know Amazon doesn't really need to sell books. We want to dig deeper into why they bother and how Amazon hurts not just small businesses, but our entire communities. On the surface, Amazon's model looks like selling cheap books at a loss to lure people into higher margin tech, like Kindle, Alexa, Audible, Prime, and Ring. But the higher margin items still aren't the product - you are. The consumer Amazon cares about isn't us, it's the companies that will buy all the data Amazon is collecting about you. Our privacy is the most profitable product. Amazon relies on our government's disinterest in protecting our privacy and surveillance devices like Ring cameras and Alexa devices to farm your data. The data is the part that's really profitable, especially when Amazon sells it to agencies like law enforcement. On the smaller scale, Amazon has sold data from people's Ring cameras to local police without any notification or permission from the camera owners. On the large scale, Amazon's tech and data models power models that allow governments to enact mass surveillance and policing. Tech contracts make up a huge portion of ICE's budget and Amazon is using their tech and your data to help ICE surveil, track, and deport our neighbors. ICE's surveillance system pays Amazon approximately $600,000 a month to power their tech.
