One of the things I wonder sometimes is what it means to have a society in which a large fraction of adults of a certain age have lost a child, vs one in which that is an uncommon experience. Surely it has to durably change people and their orientation to the world.
Currently dorking out over this graph about child mortality with my brother. Just mind boggling to take in.

✨ A few years back I stood outside Wells Cathedral for a full day and photographed the impact of the light on the front facade. I was amazed at the outcome - at how a single entity could morph and change under the changing light. 🌅 #thread

I say this as someone with first-hand experience: every dollar that microbiologists, epidemiologists, and ecologists have taken from DARPA, DTRA, DHS, and DOD - and every appeal we've made to border security as bipartisan - has legitimized this narrative and ensured it would be used in this moment.
Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino tries to blame the rise of measles cases in the U.S. on “illegal aliens,” an extremely common strategy among fascists historically.

the lesson from doge is not that we need to cut waste fraud and abuse better. the lesson is that GOVERNMENT FULFILLS MANY VERY IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS and that among those is SAVING THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF CHILDREN.

I just feel we need to keep saying, over and over, that the problem with DOGE was not its failure to cut spending. the problem with DOGE is that it CUT GLOBAL AID LEADING TO THE DEATHS OF 600K PEOPLE AND COUNTING. 1
DOGE is one of the greatest failures of the Trump administration. The next Democratic administration should pick up that issue and actually work to cut government waste, fraud, and abuse. I’d suggest starting by taking a look at Elon Musk’s government contracts.

Congress wrote into the law that someone who overstays a visa while applying for asylum is not considered to be accruing “unlawful presence,” but it didn’t explicitly say those people couldn’t be arrested and detained — because it was presumed that they wouldn’t be. Well, Trump is doing it.
We came to LA as refugees from the USSR in 1991. Life wasn’t easy, but we persevered and, I dare say, came to contribute something of worth to this nation.

Had I experienced the following when I was a boy, I don’t know what would have become of me.

I think it's cool and important that the two main literary categories are "making stuff up" and "not making stuff up"

The funny thing is that nobody in the Senate has much of a belief system either
The thing that's always frustrated the right wing ideologues who've glommed onto Trump is that he doesn't have the attention span to actually be a committed ideological warrior. He can scream all the right culture war shit, but it's just WWE pugilistic showmanship. He basically has no belief system.
Trump frickin' loves this guy lmao
