Hello!

I am your friendly neighborhood First Amendment professor here to provide some background on Chiles v. Salazar, to be argued in Supreme Court this morning.

At issue is whether Colorado can ban licensed therapists from inflicting the discredited practice of “conversion therapy” on minors

Those are not mutually exclusive

The U.S. Treasury shared a proposal to mint $1 Trump coins to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

But U.S. code says only deceased individuals may appear on U.S. currency, a tradition dating back to efforts to break from monarchical rule. https://wapo.st/4pWsyL3

The paradox of the Trump era is how bullying reflects weakness. Popular leaders don't need to intimidate urban centers. Effective authoritarians don't browbeat their military leadership en masse. Good deal-makers don't box their opponents into confrontation.

Now discussing the midterms (D +2 in generic ballot) say that they have “only” gained support among the young and POC, who are apparently either not people or not important or both
juhemnr.me
But he’s underwater, and most people reject his policies. However the NYT folk are just talking about Trumpers and their feelings and opinions as if these are the only ones that matter
juhemnr.me
The way they are discussing the NYT poll in The Daily makes it sound as if most of the country was cool with what’s going on. Saying “voters are still with Trump” suggest he has high approvals
juhemnr.me
Listening to The Daily’s analysis of their own NYT poll and, oh boy, evangelicalism has permeated society so much that even poll analysis is discussed literally. Context doesn’t matter

I don’t watch the #SuperBowl but when I do is because #BadBunny headlines the #halftimeshow.

I mean there’s gotta be a point where having yet another TV commercial with Peyton Manning has diminishing returns, or even a negative effect. Please, I want to live in that world…

WAPO SCOOP: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered hundreds of generals to travel on short notice from around the world to hear him make a speech on military standards and the “warrior ethos,” multiple people familiar with the event told The Washington Post.

New details emerge on Hegseth’s unusual mass gathering of top brass
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has summoned hundreds of generals for what is expected to be a short lecture on the “warrior ethos.” But top brass is bracing for possible firings or demotions.

Important thread on religion and the Latino vote. Christian nationalism is appealing beyond whites and gaining ground in the culture wars.

My latest entry, 'Three Perspectives on the #Latino Vote' compares the findings of the NEP exit poll, the VoteCast, and the CES data comparing #secular, Catholic, and Protestant/other Christian Latinos

The role of Catholic and other Christian #Latinos in the election was the subject of an essay I wrote for the @kettering.org blog, suggesting that the surge of GOP support among these voters may be related to #ChristianNationalism

#Latino Catholics are interesting. The account for a plurality of the Latino vote. What determined the margin of victory for Harris among Latinos was her share among Catholics. She lost them in the NEP and lost the Latino vote, won 61% in the CES and had her best margin

Looking at the Democrats' 2024 share of the #Latino vote by religious ID shows two consistent patterns: 70%+ #secular support, and 30-ish% Protestant support. Meaning, Harris won secular Latinos handily and lost Protestants.

The surveys find that Democrats (Harris) won the overall #Latino vote, but that the GOP (Trump) gained substantially. Harris' margin ranges from +5 points (NEP) to +18 (CES); these margins are still historically low. All three polls agree that the GOP got at least 40%
