Black Wide Awake is a #OnePlaceStudy worth following. Lisa's work is incredibly detailed and I've learnt a lot from her research about an area of history that is very different to my own research. #OnePlaceWednesday

No longer registered with us as a #OnePlaceStudy, but we are absolutely going to wish Black Wide-Awake, Lisa Y. Henderson’s study of the #AfricanAmerican past of Wilson County, North Carolina, a happy 10th anniversary! 🎉 #OnePlaceWednesday
Black Wide-Awake is 10 years old!
Black Wide-Awake simmered on a back burner for years; my first post was titled “At last.” Ten years and almost 7000 posts later, among the greatest joys this blog has brought me are the…

At 4:55 am, on 2nd October 1874, a convoy of five barges carrying gunpowder exploded beneath the Macclesfield Bridge in Regent's Park. The explosion was so powerful that three men died, a boat's keel landed on a house 300 yards away, and animal cages at the zoo were damaged.

Lots of newspaper reports about foxes for Long Buckby Wharf - all of them being chased by the Pytchley Hunt! And also supposedly being indirectly responsible for John Tilley's death in 1845. #OnePlaceWednesday
"Accident on the London and Birmingham Railway"
On Friday last a serious and fatal accident occurred near the Iron Bridge which crosses the Grand Junction Canal, at Long Buckby Wharf. It appears that Mr John Tilley, a blacksmith residing at the abo...

Apparently it is #InternationalCrochetDay so it seems only right to share the gorgeous cabin crochet that decorated the working narrowboats across the Midlands. Deceptively simple patterns that create intricate designs, great fun to work on!

Thanks, Julie! Had been waiting 'til all 3 eps went live before posting about this one - it was a TERRIFIC @timeteam.bsky.social weekend to be part of 😊 (though admittedly not my first - for that you have to go back to Modbury in June '23!)

Boatman Charles Pilgrim made a couple of appearances in the Police Gazette, as well as many newspapers and criminal records. The Gazette is especially useful for providing any aliases that were used, very helpful for further research. #OnePlaceStudies

I'm featured on the new Time Team episode shot at Norton Disney, which is now online for free.

There is a point on Day 3 when Carenza Lewis and I turn over a piece of masonry. Our surprise was real and was caught live. We only shot that once. A real "Time Team Moment"...

Hello, yes I'm still here!
I'm doing another bit of collaborative research on one of my Buckby Wharf people. He ended up in Southampton & is buried there.
A massive project is underway to research all the people buried here, there are several Southampton #OnePlaceStudies that might be interested?

One of the best things about being in an international server is that if I mention that I live in Bear Country (CO), the Australians all howl about how we need to shut up about Aussie wildlife, because THEIR large carnivores mostly stay in the water, NOT INVITE THEMSELVES INTO THE KITCHEN. (🧵1/?)

This sort of comes into my #OnePlaceStudy as they were remanded at Linslade Court House for trial at Aylesbury. Then in Bucks, the robbery was on the Linslade border, so extra police were stationed there throughout the search. I will be writing about the Court House and Police Station very soon!

At 3 am #OnThisDay in 1963 a London gang used a fake signal in Buckinghamshire to stop the London-bound mail train in what became known as the Great Train Robbery. Fingerprint evidence from the gang's hideout features in our #CM150 exhibition (September tickets now available). #OTD #truecrime

I’ve enjoyed looking at the newly-added old maps covering my primary #OnePlaceStudy and will be adding extracts from (and links to) a couple of them to my OPS website’s Maps page. But not the ‘accurate’ map of Shropshire dated 1767, which shows my Place . . . in the wrong place! #OnePlaceWednesday

🚨 The Suffolk parish registers will be online 6 days earlier than advertised - the latest update says they’ll be released on Ancestry on 8 August! 🥳 That’s my weekend sorted out! Great news for my #Sudbourne #OnePlaceStudy #AncestryHour #OnePlaceWednesday #GenHour
Screenshot of an email which says:
“Dear , exciting news. We can announce that Suffolk’s historic parish records from the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich will be available to search online for the first time from 8 August thanks to our partnership with Ancestry. Not only does it open-up centuries of the county’s history like never before it also preserves these irreplaceable documents for generations to come. Access will be free of charge here at The Hold in Ipswich – the home of Suffolk Archives, and at all of Suffolk’s libraries. Ancestry subscribers can also explore the records from home. This partnership will see additional local interest records digitised for viewing over the coming months.”

So you know what these are, right? Phil has a few of these in his office, which he uses to diffuse camera lights. Yesterday, he took the lights down and left these sitting on the floor, figuring he could put them away later.

Is it? That's good because it means that my theory may be right 🤞I read it as COLCLUFF which is apparently totally wrong! I'm letting down my entire Midlands ancestry here🤣
juliegfamily.bsky.social
Yesterday I came across an interesting pronunciation challenge. It 'looks' like COLCLOUGH may have sounded like COKLEY (Staffs 1800s). Going to need more research to confirm but more of my #BoatFamilies may have just connected together! #OnePlaceStudies

Scrap my idea, that Henry died in infancy, sorry! Channel or Charwell (plus variations) would be my guess for the surname, if it's an English name. As it's a hotel address, could be an European surname which is no help at all!

What time frame? There's a Henry George CHANNEL baptised 1888 Kingston upon Thames (FindmyPast).
