🌊 Serendipity often drives science forward.

A “lost” Argo float drifted under Antarctica’s ice shelves and resurfaced with a warning: warm water is creeping under major glaciers like Denman and Totten.

What’s at risk? Up to 5 m of global sea-level rise.

Using nearly a decade of satellite data, researchers in Science show how glaciers worldwide speed up and slow down with the changing of the seasons—annual rhythms that reveal how Earth’s ice may respond to long-term climate warming. https://scim.ag/4oocEad
Seasonal dynamics of Earth’s glaciers and ice sheets
The sensitivity of Earth’s glaciers to environmental change is on display each year as they change speed with the seasons, and a glacier’s response to warming from winter to summer may help predict it...

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:

Termite pellet microbes provide timeline for home infestation detection
Termite pellets can linger long after the insects that dropped them have disappeared. By testing for microbes in the excrement, researchers can distinguish old droppings from fresh, and whether a colony is actively chewing its way through a home.
