I've only ever seen the Japanese version once, so I'm still not used to hearing this music playing in any context besides the soundtrack CD I still have. 😄 That difference I was expecting when I went into that version, but what I didn't anticipate was how much his original noises recharacterize him:

These image edits, for example, clearly use the redesign (except changing the nostrils), and yet they hew more closely to DK's previous look just from how they make him emote. There's no reason you couldn't do the inverse and animate, say, the Tropical Freeze model to make all the faces on the left.
