For the record, Castlevania would be my NES pick as well had I ever actually owned an NES and not just an emulator. (And by that same metric, Country 2 might even beat out Super Metroid for the SNES slot.)

From what I understand, not only do the 3D elements in the remaster stand out jarringly against the prerendered backgrounds by virtue of the former and only the former being in HD, but the backgrounds in the remaster are somehow actually lower-res than on PS1. The original seems to be the way to go.
