<article data-history-node-id="433134" about="https://www.middleeasteye.net/live-blog/live-blog-update/african-union-somalia-and-saudi-arabia-condemn-israels-recognition" class="live-blog-update default clearfix"> <h2> <a href="https://www.middleeasteye.net/live-blog/live-blog-update/african-union-somalia-and-saudi-arabia-condemn-israels-recognition" rel="bookmark"> <span class="field field-title">The African Union, Somalia and Saudi Arabia condemn Israel's recognition of Somaliland</span> </a> </h2> <div class="content"> <div class="field field-field-text"><p>The African Union (AU) says it rejects any recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state.</p> <p>The chief of the pan-African body, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf,&nbsp; said the move endangered peace and stability across the continent.</p> <p>"Any attempt to undermine the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia… risks setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the continent,” he said in a statement.&nbsp;</p> <p>He also said that Somaliland “remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.”</p> <p>Meanwhile, Somalia said the decision was a "deliberate attack" on its sovereignty that would undermine peace in the region.</p> <p>Several other countries - including Saudi Arabia - also condemned Israel's decision.&nbsp;President Donald Trump told the New York Post that he had no plans to recognise the breakaway region as an independent state.&nbsp;</p> <p>Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has unsuccessfully for pushed for international recognition for more than three decades.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </article>
