same deal with law right now. there are lots of tools that *would* be super helpful if they were reliable, but given the acceptable error rate is zero and so you have to check all their outputs anyway, you may as well just do it the old fashioned way.
suspect a big reason why many academics and others who work in areas where getting facts RIGHT is key are disinterested in using LLMs for research:

they’ve tried it, they keep noticing major errors in output, and they conclude that having to verify all that doesn’t actually save them time.

the replies to this post are deranged. i too am frustrated by the demise of ad-supported media and unbundling of publication such that you need to pay every writer you like directly, but i never realized how many people think promoting paywalled content is somehow unethical?
[preparing to get screamed at] I think I officially don’t need to know if you’re mad that an article is paywalled. Perhaps that can be an Inside Thought

in contrast to the human drivers of san francisco, who have just been blowing through the intersections like the lights never existed
Waymo has halted service in San Francisco after numerous videos & images showed its autonomous cars snarling traffic during the blackout.

With traffic lights down, Waymos across the city stopped dead in their tracks at intersections.

it's very funny that they didn't remove the second "the," though I suppose if they did it would sound like he's dead too

i remember thinking “Virgin” was an honorific of some kind and asking my mother why mary got be the Virgin but joseph didn’t get anything special, and then she had to explain to me what a virgin was
how do christians explain the virgin Mary to kids without telling them moms make babies and generally need fathers to do it? do any of you have experience with this? genuinely curious

it's a small part of his legacy but the albert brooks documentary rob reiner made a couple years was just the sweetest thing, felt like he just wanted to tell his bro how much he loved him via a movie

opening night screening of ‘snakes on a plane,’ a marathon screening of the first three ‘final destination’ movies at the village east, and the related (1) world premier of ‘sorry to bother you’ at grand lake and (2) sitting next to boots riley at a screening of ‘marcel the shell with shoes on’
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

checking out this "caroline" album dominating the year end lists and it sounds like a lot of stuff I liked in 2008 but unlike most of that stuff I think it's probably actually good

while i am glad people are ditching spotify and glad many are considering qobuz (a platform i’ve used for years and which seems to be run by people who actually like music) the reason it has the highest per-stream rate is because it is expensive and has relatively few users (and thus streams). sorry

setting aside the unhinged racism, deporting every undocumented immigrant would actually make most of these things *more* expensive
this defies parody. also helps explain why Sec Bessent bizarrely blamed immigrants when confronted with a question about high beef prices

if you’re coming by car: welcome! we have convenient parking right at the museum and various pricing promotions to incentivize you to do so! we love you!

pickup trucks for the average person should not have been allowed to advance past this. if you need anything bigger, you should have to provide some kind of documentation showing you have the license and need for special heavy machinery, otherwise you get the 1990 toyota hilux
