Pastor at Christ City Church DC.
"Kicking at the darkness till it bleeds daylight."
Five years ago, I was taking a prayer morning at the Arboretum. It included walking through the columns that were part of the US Capitol until 1958. Afterwards, I got lunch on Capitol Hill, little aware of what was being fomented and what was about to take place in this city that has become my home.

Grateful to be able to get into good trouble with this crew: the staff and elders of Christ City Church (just missing Chellese and Ritu). Merry Christmas from all of us!

Now seems like a swell time to point out that Frontline just released this excellent 11-minute mini-documentary about what happened inside CECOT.

Talked about #joy when we’re weary: "When we practice joy in the midst of injustice, we’re not ignoring the injustice. We’re prophesying its end.

Closed out our church's 15-month journey through Acts. This was one of my main takeaways:

The Spirit is never hindered by our wounds or our waiting or our anxieties or our uncertainties. If anything, the Spirit does some of the most astonishing work in places we think are the most constrained.

THREAD: Judge Ellis is the first federal judge to review extensive body cam video of DHS's actions in Chicago. She finds that DHS *repeatedly* misled the public and made claims that were disproven by agents' own videos.

I'll go through some of the most egregious ones here.

43. Taking a moment to reflect.

It’s been quite a year. Grieving so much and also grateful for so much—and so many of you. And I’m still here, still going, and still committed to working for a world where all can flourish, by the grace of God.

“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” — James Baldwin

Two weeks ago, I returned from ReStory US—a pilgrimage through the American South with the Telos Group and Christ City Church's Mosaic peacemaking cohort.

Empires can raid our communities, but they cannot take our compassion, our convictions, or our courage. They can build monuments to greed and grift, but they cannot take our generosity. They can pollute the air, but they cannot choke out our hope. Because we belong to a different kingdom.

From Sunday at Christ City Church:

"God’s power doesn’t always run through the hallways of power that we often think of: presidents and legislators and judges, those with wealth or weapons. More often than not, God’s power moves through the margins.

When I was a kid, there was a verse that worried me. Jesus says: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father.”

Praying for those, including friends and family, in HK and the surrounding region, hit hard by #Ragasa (Taiwan, China, the Philippines).
Super Typhoon Ragasa caused significant rises in sea levels and flooding along Hong Kong's eastern coastline in Heng Fa Chuen, as the city triggered its highest storm signal, T10.

I took a social media break for most of yesterday, so was late to the news about Charlie Kirk. And then I wanted to spend time processing before sharing. Here’s what I’ve got:

Gonna put #FiveMinuteFriday on the shelf for a bit.

For almost 7 months, I’ve been posting nearly every week, sharing from DC—the epicenter of so many cruel, chaotic, and incompetent decisions—and trying to process it all as a pastor, through the lens of my faith.

Too tired from the week for a #FiveMinuteFriday. So will just say: #FreeDC.
