Really interesting research showing that while ultra-specialization in a single discipline might lead to better results early in one’s career, multi-discipline training and practice pays off big time in the long run. This applies to a range of professions from scientists to athletes and more
Recent discoveries on the acquisition of the highest levels of human performance

New England just set a new record for wind power. 1,332 MW. That's almost 10% of the total system load at the moment.

If we'd been building offshore wind for a decade, as was planned, it would be so much more. .... sigh ...

Yes! Nice! Harbord is finally finished! 🙌 #BikeTO
Toronto’s Cycling and Pedestrian Projects Team continues to hit it out of the park. Out for a ride today and here’s just some of the new cycling facilities that I came across. New concrete planters and permanent curbs on Harbord Street. /1

A cautiously optimistic result on AI and disinformation.

A week before 2024 UK elections 13% of all voters used AI to ask about political topics. A randomized trial found this may be good: using AI led to similar gains in true knowledge as doing web research, regardless of model & prompt used.

Today, the UN officially designated Israel’s assault on Gaza as a genocide.

As a party to the Genocide Convention, the U.S. has a legal obligation to obey our own laws, stop weapons sales to Israel, and demand a permanent ceasefire.

End the genocide. Ceasefire now.

Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
Active travel can help tackle the climate crisis earlier than electric vehicles – even if you swap the car for a bike for just one trip a day.

I don't think it's a coincidence that so many mayoral candidates are running on platforms that unapologetically promise to give people great mobility options besides driving — and they're winning their primaries by *massive* margins. Wrote about urbanism as a campaign issue in Seattle & beyond.

The transit advocate's strong early performance in Seattle's mayoral primary is rekindling a national conversation about the power of bold transportation reform to win at the ballot box.

Good news indeed!
Globally, roughly a third more power is being generated from the sun this spring than last. If this exponential rate of growth can continue, we will soon live in a very different world, @billmckibben.bsky.social writes.
