"I do not trust them," I spat. Rei was quick to agree with me, until he patted my shoulder several times to get my attention, breaking my rising anger. "But Chi! Look! Look! There's someone young like us!" he excitedly said under hushed breath as he hooked his arm under mine and tugged me closer so I could better follow where he was pointing. He was correct. Hiding poorly behind a man that was middle aged compared to the others was a thin young man perhaps two or three sun taller than Rei with tousled white hair he covered half of his face with. The longer we watched these newcomers unpack, we found that if Rei and I could describe him in a single word with how nervous he was, it would be pure.

“Just how long has this party been going on?” A Quick Look around and she could see that pretty much everybody was, indeed, ‘wasted’. “At a guess? Forty-two years, give or take. It’s difficult to keep track of time because …” He sniggered, hand rising to cover his nose and mouth before raising his voice and leaning back to address the other party-goers. “… it’s always party time here!” “Party time!” The crowd chorused and Demi had started to hate the very concept of parties, because it made people into idiots. Still, this was a monumental level of idiocy that she had previously never encountered. A forty-two year long party? How could that possibly work? Where did the alcohol come from? What did they eat? Each other? New arrivals? The guards? And why did her first thoughts turn to these people becoming cannibals? There had to be other ways to survive without resorting to eating the flesh of someone you had recently shared a daiquiri with. Regardless, they had managed to make their way into the prison station without getting shot, incinerated or, yet, eaten. That only meant they had a toehold on the station. The rest of the place may not be so laid-back.

I had warned her that there would be animosity towards me and I guess I really did not look like the typical widow, but I was the widow nevertheless. I think she did not completely comprehend it all when we talked. I sat motionless through the ceremony, just wanting it to end, and for my turn to begin. I hated sitting through this religious ceremony, but it was your wish. We both knew when you had to be hospitalized that it would be where you would die, in that cursed hospital, I had had no choice but to promise you this and then to follow it through. Finally the pastor signaled for me and said that the widow will say few words.
