I'm horrified.
I'm angry.

This article manages to name her husband before it names… her.
Article reads:
Woman named as Archbishop of Canterbury in historic first

The 63-year-old archbishop-designate is married to Eamonn Mullally, with whom she has two children. Originally from Woking in Surrey, she was the UK's chief nursing officer from 1999 to 2004.

States are facing catastrophic SNAP cuts from the Big Beautiful Bill--North Carolina is saying they may shutter their SNAP program. The Bill cuts the budget to administer SNAP, charges states billions for making administrative mistakes, all while adding even more admin complexity to the program.
Eligibility guidelines are complicated—and especially so now with new work requirements. Beneficiaries’ incomes and work patterns are also complicated—their employment is unstable and often intermittent given how low-wage labor markets function. Moreover, their expenses, like childcare costs, are highly variable, but also critical to determining eligibility and benefit levels. The interaction, inevitably, leads to mistakes. Importantly, error rates also include procedural mistakes—like a missing form—even if the benefit is correct.

hi friends of #academicsky -- I know many of y'all host podcasts, and I'd love to hear more about the logistics of how you fund/produce/distribute those! Any retweets/comments tagging someone are super helpful!

You will be totally unsurprised that @jamellebouie.net has written the most sensible & accurate take on all of this. We need to be able to hold two thoughts in our heads at the same time. Political violence is bad & should be condemned. And far right authoritarianism is bad & should be condemned.

This could be an effect of selection or access to rural healthcare, which is an avenue for future research we're excited to start digging into!

Many thanks due to my excellent co-authors, our research scientists at the GLUE lab at the UW Nelson Institute/GLUE lab, and our great RAs here at Korbel.

We find consistent evidence of increased temperatures increasing violence in the short-term, but much less consistent evidence for rainfall in the long-term. Somewhat surprisingly, we don't find a differential effect of rainfall in regions with dependence on rainfed agriculture/cattle production.
kaitsims.bsky.social
We use daily data on rainfall and max temperature in Brazil to see how short vs. long-term stressors impact lethal and nonlethal physical violence and calls for service. This lets us speak to whether the effects of climate are short term vs. long term and account for dependent variable selection.
kaitsims.bsky.social
Using data from Brazil, we're able to test for changes to DV in a context where extreme heat and rainfall can both impact household stress and, especially in the interior of the country, directly affect household income in major ways.
kaitsims.bsky.social
Climate change has been shown to increase risk factors for violence, but studies typically study only one aspect (e.g., extreme rainfall, drought, or temperature changes). It's difficult to tease out mechanisms behind the effect, eg income shocks, emotional stressors, household bargaining power.

I shouldn't be shocked, but I'm still always brought up short to realize how many people think "civility" means "white people speaking in relatively calm voices" no matter what vile shit they say.

"Charlie Kirk gave me the courage to be more transphobic" is a wild thing to put in a both-sides hagiography

‘He Gave Me Confidence’: How Charlie Kirk Connected With Young Men
With his right-wing group Turning Point USA, Mr. Kirk engaged controversial topics. Some students were inspired. Others found his views appalling.

As a Christian, he did not always feel he could say what he actually thought about the issue.

“It’s kind of scary to say what you believe in, especially in this cancel culture,” said Porter LaFeber, a 22-year-old studying sciences at Utah Valley University who was at an event on Wednesday where Mr. Kirk was killed. “Charlie Kirk seemed like he just went totally above that. He kind of gave a voice to the people that were maybe a little bit scared.”

“He gave me the confidence to be able to believe what I believe,” Mr. LaFeber added.

Total federal spending is up +8% in 2025 year-to-date to Sept 9 over 2024.

The story that the fed govt is tightening its belt is contradicted by its own real-time expenditure data. Admin spectacularly hammering some things but raising spending elsewhere.

Was -7% just after Inauguration Day.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) on the shooting of Charlie Kirk:

"Political violence, unfortunately, has ramped up in this country ... I think there are people who are fomenting it in this country. I think the president's rhetoric often foments it."
