Hi new follower horde 🤭, I'm Kami (like it says on the can). I self-publish mostly sci-fi/fantasy stories that explore gender and technology and relationships.

I'm also currently working towards completing some small games to hone my skills for my dream creature-breeding game, 'Go Forth'!
I am somehow completely unsurprised that Mozilla is going all in on the current trend of AI idiocy. Seems very on-brand for the organisation actually. 🙄

Three trips to emergency for the kids this year (plus at least one extra urgent care visit), hoping to do a bit less of that next year perhaps by stapling bubble wrap on them or something. 🤣

I do get the intent but I wish we could retire 'kids understand queer people easily' as an argument for or against anything. We don't let the value of any other concept hinge on whether it's simple to explain to a five-year-old and nor is there anything wrong with children who don't 'just get it'.

Please spend more time clicking on (and sharing!) links to personal sites, your friend's Bandcamp, that specialist news site, and that forum you used to read daily than posting about how you miss the old internet. The old internet's still here! You just stopped visiting!

Spent last night almost entirely playing Stardew Valley and you know what, that was absolutely the right decision. 🥔

I call on the Australian government to #RaiseTheRate of all support payments to a living wage.
This would be the single most effective way to lift the productivity, quality of life, and well-being of the whole country.

If you're an avid reader who loves monthly subcriptions, you can get all my books in Kobo Plus (alongside many other indies!). We love a subscription service that doesn't ask exclusivity from its authors ~

Explaining to my wife the series of difficulties I had getting my Django-based book tracker application with two (TWO!) bits of custom middleware to run on my Debian laptop. Not sure whether she was more excited about my package compatibility issues or my ultimate failure.

THOUGHT YOU WERE SAFE FROM THESE POSTS DIDN'T YOU well I failed to get my book tracker active on my alternate laptop to keep tracking there but I'm sneaking this in while I brave a few minutes on my usual machine to grab some stuff. See, I've even been reading a bit over the past few days. 🤣

My wife is doing a partial digital detox over her Christmas break which mainly means not using her computer and I'm happy for her because she definitely gets enough computer time normally but also I'm already getting meme-sharing blue balls. 🤣

Always fun to get to the yearly tradition of being horrified all over again that Home Alone is regarded by so many as a fun Christmas movie.

I FELL INTO THE TRAP I wasted like an hour in Debian trying to get two pieces of software that did not want to recognise one another to play ball to no avail and I may only be using this computer for a week or two anyway, why do I do these things to myself. 😭

I didn't actually realise this was good for accessibility; I was concerned it might be otherwise (and many of you probably aren't aware you can delete link text after the preview is created). Really good to learn these little things that make everyone's lives better on here.
I'm begging you all... Just remove the text link from the post before you hit send. As soon as the preview card generates, you can delete the text! Instantly and easy accessibility improvement trick that also also makes your posts visually better 🥳

Epic pays for licensing fees for the games they give away for free as promotions. Which means even if YOU aren't paying for it, you're giving money to JK Rowling to harm transgender people AND elevating her stature by giving her franchise higher numbers.

Just three newly-met friends going on an adventure that will change their lives.

THE CHRONICLES OF NEREZIA is a classic quest story full of all the things I love: queer found families, board/card games, side quests, and funky worldbuilding!

Found a PIC squashed into my office carpet and I feel kinda bad for the little guy, gonna try to straighten up its pins and see if it still has its micro juice. 🤭

It's been a ride following the rollout of the kids' social media ban here. I actually think kids and most adults shouldn't be on these hellsites. But I swear if I hear one more smug bad take from some so-called expert I'm going to consider going out into the real world to smack some bottoms. 🙄

Absolutely harrowing day of trying to back up anything important on my laptop in between horrific fan grinding noises while keeping the kids alive (only one injury). Very much enjoying a peaceful evening on my backup laptop even if everything isn't quite set up on here how I like these days. 🍵

Backing up everything on my laptop today so I can move to using an older laptop until my fans are replaced. In the past 24 hours my fans have gone to grindtown because I was typing excitedly about blobfish in Stardew Valley and also because I deposited my Neopets currency with too much gusto. 😭

Not sure how it's already day 10 of #ArtAdventCalendar, but here we are! Here's one of my little polymer clay crows. Each feather is cut and textured, and the crows are always brushed with chameleon powder for a little extra magic.

I realised last night that the silly 'find the cats' smartphone game I like to wind down with sometimes was using an AI-generated background image for its daily puzzle. I only noticed because it was actively unpleasant to view, so many weird artifacts/fuzzy bits. If I see another I'm uninstalling! 🤮

Generative AI is probably now helping the sorts of people who would always proudly outline to me their 'groundbreaking' story idea (that was actually the plot of five other well-known books/movies/games) to produce said idea. It can even reassure them the result really is groundbreaking. 🤣
I said it before, will say it again -- generative AI fetishizes "ideas" while sneering at effort, execution, and education. That, despite Gen-AI being built on and out of other people's effort, execution and education.
A.I. and the Fetishization Of Ideas
In writing and in dispensing my (very dubious, probably shady) writing advice, I am often keen to note that ideas are bullshit. Most writers treat them like precious gems when really, ideas are lik…
