@sandela.bsky.social just dropping a note on the why of the body cams ask following Nooran’s murder in Longueuil. It comes from his friends and other teens mostly, not from anti racist leaders or folks who have advocated on police brutality before.

Thank goodness for @tressiemcphd.bsky.social’s voice.

“Whenever politicians, activists and investors agree that there is a merit crisis at Harvard, it signals that a battle rages, not over rigor, but over power.”

Power.

Friends, it’s always about power.

Opinion | The Claudine Gay Debacle Was Never About Merit
Merit, itself, cannot be defined. That is why the concept is so useful for slippery slopes.

In the hands of the biggest media corporations, the term 'diversity' has become a poison pill. A way to silo and minimize the contributions of the historically marginalized. There are *real* books and 'diverse' books, which you can safely ignore. At conferences, real panels and 'diverse' panels. Etc

Scholastic asks, "Do you want to opt out of 'diverse' books at your school's next book fair?" Your participation in white supremacy has never been easier, just uncheck the 'diverse' books box– poof, no problems. 🙄
Scholastic Under Fire for Allowing Schools to Opt Out of ‘Diverse Books’ for Book Fairs
Scholastic has been accused of bending to right-wing pressure, making having diverse books optional for school book fairs.

In my column today I wrote about Pierre Poilievre using the n-word on Parliament and the fact that everyone in the House and in Canadian media ignored it like it didn’t happen. Canadian media continue to gatekeep when it comes to anti-Blackness

The silence of the House speaks volumes
The House of Commons is for everyone, so why should Black Canadians hear anti-Blackness that goes unremarked?

This graph tells many stories but I hope it helps explain why survivors of sexual violence have big feelings when rapists are sentenced.

We can, and should, re-define what justice looks like but it's also important to hold space for why moments like today feel so monumental.
A YWCA Canada infographic explaining how there are about 460,000 sexual assaults in Canada every year. Out of ever 1000 sexual assaults, : Only 33 are reported to police, 29 are recorded as ac rime, 12 have charges laid, 6 are prosecuted and only 3 lead to a conviction.

We're celebrating Kai Cheng Thom's 100th 'Ask Kai' advice column!

It's also her last. As she shifts into more opinion writing and reporting here at Xtra, read her final column—a letter to herself.

I've been doing pro-choice activism in Canada for 20 years. Canadian anti-choice MPs put forward the same 3 bills over and over again :

1- Adding a penalty for killing a pregnant person

2- Banning "Sex selective abortion"

3- A committee to decide when human life begins
Canada has zero pro-choice Conservative MPs, watchdog says
Abortion rights group places remaining 15 Conservatives on list of anti-choice MPs after vote on ‘fetal rights’ bill

The new tagline foretells that everyone still on the app are destined to die from using the app. That is the prophecy.

Glory be to those who blaze.
