The FDA has suddenly dropped a proposed rule to require asbestos testing in cosmetics.

The rule would've set up testing to identify cancer-causing asbestos in talc-containing products.

Contamination has repeatedly been found in talc-based cosmetics before.

Critical Path: Idea with merit (plausible science) Funding ($ Billion) taxpayer / company FDA authorizes study of drug Participating Academic Centers & Clinicians Ethics board (IRB) review protocol and consent Informed patient consent aided by their treating physicians Data Monitoring Committee decide if study in progress is safe. IRB reviews Data Monitoring Committee reports Study teams and Sponsor submit results to FDA Results (good and bad) recorded in ClinicalTrials.gov FDA approves or rejects application Only 9% of studies lead to marketing approval The process can take 5 to 10 years.
