A brief thread on alt-text.

Alt text is descriptive text that conveys the meaning of an image. It's designed to make visual content accessible to people with vision disabilities. When a person uses assistive technology such as a screen reader, the screen reader will read the onscreen text aloud 1/7

Having a robot write irrelevant emails for you sounds great and inconsequential in theory but it’s unsurprising to me how quickly people have moved the goalposts to having the robot write anything for you that would require personality or emotional labor

Saying this with as much love as possible, but please stop using AI generated graphics for activism. Plenty of artists willingly donate their time and work designing for activists, and always have. It's not necessary to step on an increasingly struggling group in order to promote worthy causes.

Big tech promotes the story that since ChatGPT burst onto the scene, AI has been so popular it's rushed to meet the demand. The reality is different. A study by design scholars shows tech co's have had to push AI on its users with a variety of intrusive tactics.

It's always a pleasure to join the #MAET staff and students to examine ed tech practices and develop research projects through a critical, equitable-lens. I also have the pleasure of working with the #MALXD programme throughout the year, but it's so valuable to spend time together in person as well.
