This case … squarely presents the issue whether non-citizens lawfully present here in United States actually have the same free speech rights as the rest of us.”

“The Court answers this Constitutional question unequivocally ‘yes, they do’.

Academic friends, if your NSF grants have been terminated by the administration, FABBS is hosting a webinar Friday about appealing the decisions. It's important that as many people appeal as possible to show we're not accepting this targeting of science. Link to the webinar registration is below.

Thank you @srcdorg.bsky.social for issuing this statement concerning Rumeysa Ozturk from Tufts University. I am hoping that other scholarly societies will provide statements. To read the statement in whole: contentsharing.net/actions/emai...

Statement from SRCD President Vonnie C. McLoyd on SRCD Member Rümeysa Öztürk’s Detainment by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

The United States (U.S.) has proudly built an international reputation for upholding fundamental freedoms, including speech, press, and religion—principles that are not only protected by the U.S. Constitution but are also essential to a strong and thriving democracy. Academic freedom, derived from these core liberties, is a fundamental pillar of higher education in the U.S.

The Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) is deeply concerned when these principles are violated, as in the recent detention of SRCD member Rümeysa Öztürk, a Fulbright scholar and doctoral student at Tufts University. Öztürk held an F-1 student visa, which allows international students to pursue education in the U.S.

Öztürk, like many members of SRCD and other scientific societies, legally migrated to the U.S. with the intention of experiencing the freedom to explore, express, and contribute to the scientific community. As a doctoral student in child and human development, Öztürk is one of many emerging scholars poised to
make crucial contributions to research, ultimately helping to ensure that children and families thrive.1 Research consistently demonstrates the significant contributions of international students to the U.S. economy and the advancement of the scientific enterprise.2,3

SRCD stands with science and the scientific workforce, ensuring that our members have the freedom and opportunity to engage with their peers, challenge prevailing ideas, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge. This is the engine of the research enterprise—the freedom and opportunity to conduct excellent science and be a force of change for good. An important part of rigorous science is the exchange of ideas across national borders. Actions that threaten this exchange can ultimately disrupt international research collaborations that are essential to expand…

I was just going to test my in-class activity for tomorrow and found that this was gone! Glad I looked at Bluesky (read: procrastinated) rather than prepping a new activity. Thanks so much for saving this resource!

I'm going to be teaching Intro Psych for the first time this fall semester. Would anyone be willing to share syllabi, activities, slides, anything else? I would also love to teach this using only open-access materials, so I'm especially interested in open-access courses!

The people of Gaza have a right to self-determination.

I hope to God this is just bluster, and not a serious attempt to take control of a territory, force 1.8 million people into exile, and build a tourist attraction in Middle East.

Trump says he wants the U.S. to take ownership of the Gaza Strip
Trump said he and Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu talked Tuesday about relocating Palestinians and leveling Gaza, which he suggested could be the "Riviera of the Middle East" under U.S. ownership.

I’m considering integrating a class-run experiment in my stereotyping/prejudice grad class next semester.

Has anyone done something similar and would be willing to share their assignments/syllabus?

In a new paper w/ @clarawilkins.bsky.social & @calvinklai.bsky.social, I studied who POC & women expect will have their back after facing racism & sexism. We found 2 patterns for who’s expected to show solidarity: Black > Hispanic > Asian ≥ White & women > men.
