a few of us up in the cheap seats remember when the academic job market was just put to luck. If there weren’t any jobs, there was no analysis of greater social forces playing out in the professorial job market. Tenure track-maybe next year. Such times of innocence.
Being in a permanent position at a well funded university is honestly a very nice job. The supply of such jobs has never really met the demand and at present is shrinking, often reflective of (or simply directly caused by) quite bad social changes upending the social contract in the prosperous West.

This is the rigamarole that women will go through if the SAVE act is passed where names on DL and birth certificate need to be the same: can’t get a real ID or a passport until they do. And you can’t vote until they do. Trump‘s way of messing with the voter rolls. Cancel mailin voting in effect.
Tried to get my real ID. I had my license, my SS card and my birth certificate.
I was not allowed to get my real ID because my birth name is different than my married name. Now I have to go dig up a marriage certificate. You know who wouldn’t have to do this? A man.
