Professors at USGS coop units were absolutely critical parts of my education at 3 different universities. They're probably affiliated with more useful conservation research than any other agency on earth. Join the rally to defend science next week!

While we're debating what quotes the new Pope did or did not actually say, here's your regularly scheduled reminder that the Bishop of Pittsburgh read my book and has decreed that sandbar shark is #BestShark.

If you are a scientist with experience communicating science to the public, and you want to do one of these Stand Up For Science teach-ins, I can help you plan it. DMs open.
Inspired by Vietnam-era activism, Stand Up For Science is hosting a series of teach-ins around the USA this summer, focusing on the importance of science and science funding. I’m doing one May 30th in Silver Spring. Many of you should consider doing one too, and I’m happy to help you plan it 🦑🧪🌎

Don’t shame people for not immediately reading all the books they buy. Some books aren’t made to be ready right away, okay? Some books need time to mature. Some books need to cure for a while. Some books are prosciutto, and don’t you forget it.

I keep seeing heartbreaking stories about people who spend years in grad school, apply to jobs, and only then learn that their dream job needs a skill they didn’t learn during grad school.

Looking at job ads *now*, years before you’re applying, can help identify skills to develop.

The world knows about climate change mostly because of great American researchers, and that work has been largely centered at NOAA.
Trump and Musk are now shutting down that brilliant work. They are contemptible, short-sighted, and sold out

Sculpin fishing has a following in Japan, where anglers use a short rod and poke bait under rocks.

I made my own sculpin rod fastening a tip to a broken section of fly rod.

Sculpins are small but they bite aggressively. A niche sport.
